Putnam and Throop — Brooklynian

Putnam and Throop

Hey Everyone: I am close to putting an offer in on a house at Putnam and Throop and am hoping for some feedback. I have noticed other people on Putnam on this board and thought I might be able to get some constructive advice and info. My wife and I have a two year old and a baby on the way and I mostly am looking for thoughts about how this neighborhood is for kids and what kinds of resources/activities are available within walking distance of this location. Any thoughts are very appreciated. Best, Sam

  • wasder,

    This is cthecat.

I want you to know that I am all for a well-balanced and diverse neighborhood. This part of Bed-Stuy is really great; a lot of hard working families and a lot of new professionals are moving into the area.

You should definitely consider the neighborhood as a viable place to bring up a family. I have seen a lof of change in the past eight years and hope that the improvement continues.

If you buy your home on the block, I will be the first to welcome you with open arms. Once you come to that juncture, please let me know so that you can meet one of your new neighbors.

  • Right on. Thanks. Will do. The decision should be made in the next week or two. Thanks for replying.
  • Hi Wasder,

My wife and I moved to Bed-Stuy several months ago and liked the neighborhood very much. We lived two blocks away from the Tompkins park which is a great park with a baseball field and a huge dog run.
On Bedford and Madison, you have a YMCA.

I hope to see you in the neighborhood. Good luck with your house hunting.

  • Thanks Tennisfan. I appreciate the feedback. I read about your decision to move to the neigborhood in an earlier thread and am glad you went through with it. How are the kid facilities in Tompkins Park?

    Anyone else have any thoughts?
  • The park is great for kids. Its got a nice couple of playground areas which have all been renovated in the past year or two. The big draw to the park is baseball in the summer. The little league there has about 250 kids from ages 4-16 playing from April to July. Parks and rec also has karate in the building as well as a bunch of other activities include outdoor concerts in the atrium area. I just found out there is a small theater inside that building as well.

My kids have played in the little league for the last three years. Its a great way to meet other families in the neighborhood and at least with the younger kids (under 12), there is a pretty good turnout amongst families for the games. Its not unusual to see parents out in the park with their kids for 2-3 hours at a time every other day.

As far as what to do with the kids, there is the YMCA and many of the local churches have activities such as boy/girl scouts, summer camps, day care, etc. You are also walking distance from the Brooklyn Children's Museum on a nice day.

One thing that I'd suggest is that you make friends with some of the long-time residents that have kids. They'll be your best source of information for local events and activities.
  • You asked me (on another thread) what my thoughts were about Putnam Avenue. I live just on the edge of Clinton Hill/Bed Stuy, at Classon, which is quite a few blocks from where you are looking, so I am not so sure how much help I can be. My block is a little empty (side of apartment buildings, Masonic Temple, and four empty houses), so we don't really hang out on the block. We tend to orient more towards Clinton Hill proper (the Underwood playground at Washington and Lafayette) and Fort Greene Park. My son attended PS 20 for pre-k and is now at PS 261 in Boerum Hill. I've looked at other properties closer to where you are, but decided I wanted to remain walking distance to all aforementioned places as well as BAM, Brooklyn Museum etc. I think for those reasons if I were looking now I would focus more on the blocks between Classon and Nostrand (Madison. Monroe, etc) than the much prettier blocks further out in Bed-Stuy.

Putnam Avenue where I live has had a lot of drug dealing, prostitution, and in the six years I have lived here I think about 6 people have been killed on the street within four blocks of my house! Perhaps because of this, there isn't really a vibrant street life in a positive sense around me. That said, it hasn't really affected my son because of his age. I will begin to worry, perhaps, when he comes of the age when he will be travelling to and from the subway by himself. (Read "Fortress of Solitude" for descriptions of clueless bohemian parents in tough neighborhood). But for now he travels always accompanied, and we have a great time.
  • I live right there, on Putnam/Throop for the past 4 years. I have seen murders and drug dealing right in front of my house, its loud, but its cool. No one really bothers me or my kids. I like it, but the noise does get to be a bit much in the summer, especially if you live closer to the corner as I do.

We have a bunch of neighborhood people that look out for eachother around here, I am actually not friendly at all with any of the newer neighbors that have moved it. I sense a rudeness from them. Like I said, Ive been here for 4yrs, right as the gentrification came into full swing, and I actually like the locals a whole lot better than the hipster trash that has since moved in and tried to take over. Not saying thats you -

But yea - its cool, if you can handle it.
  • Hey Wadser,

I live in the area, Madison and MG. I'm a woman and I'm black (since that seems to be a very important point on this board :-p) and I've lived here for a little under a year. I moved to Bed Stuy from West Harlem. I like the neighborhood for the most part. It's pretty much the same as my 'hood in Harlem. In the summer it is very festive. There is a never-ending BBQ/Earth Wind and Party across the street from me and people are out and about at all hours of the night. I have never felt overtly threatened while walking alone, but I don't generally walk home from the train after 11:00pm. If I'm out after that time I always try and catch a gypsy cab on Fulton.

All that being said, if I had an option of purchasing in this neighborhood would I? If I had a car; maybe. If I had to always rely on the train; Probably not. It is really loud in the summer. It's kind of annoying to have to think about always hailing a cab when I come home late. There aren't any grocery stores in the vicinity. If I had a car the grocery thing wouldn't bother me, but I still would be hesitant to buy a house in such a noisy area. That's just me. I'm from Indiana and I guess I miss the quiet. :-p
