They are indeed good, but I am somewhat obsessed with the Heights Coffee muffins, actually. What can I say, I'm a sucker for crazy gourmet chock-full-of-fruit flavors.
  • Heights Coffee gets their muffins from Blue Sky Bakery on 5th Ave. If you like those, you should walk over and try get a warm one there in the morning. yum.
  • Good to know! 5th Ave is a little far for me (even Heights would be a hike if it weren't right next to the subway I need to take anyway) but I can recommend it to my Park Slope friends.

And they're often still warm when I get them at HC. YUM

(where's a drooling emoticon when you need one?)
  • ok, so we have no shortage of great muffins, but jg has raised an excellent point about the pizza situation. dire. we used to have jim-jim's on vanderbilt, which, although not great, at least was close.

the place that replaced it, cucina rustico (incidentally, is that what the original post was referring to by cucina?), has excellent gourmet dine-in-only pizzas, which are great with a bottle of red from fermented grapes, but there isn't either a good slice joint or delivery place around.

yes, you can order from the places on seventh, which are ok (oscar's, which is decent, fast and closest to the ph, gets my vote as the best option), or two boots, which is great but is too far from the ph to arrive hot. and the places on washington sell slices of warm cardboard with yellow goo.

have i missed anything? suggestions anyone?

I like antonio's on Flatbush near Van Helsing.
  • You can get slices at Cucina Rustica; I get them to go all the time. $2 for the margherita. It's a pretty big slice - great deal.

The used to have other slices to go, but I think they may have done away with them.

EDIT: talking about pizza, that is...

Ginos is awesome for late night delivery.. I don't like eating in there either though. its pretty grimy.
  • Ugh, I loathe Gino's pizza. It's just nasty! (And I'm not that picky, either. I grew up on Dominos.) I've given up on pizza in the neighborhood...it's not even on my radar anymore. Strangely, the best pizza I've had in the past couple of years has always been in Connecticut.
  • LIES! ALL LIES!
  • the crust at ginos totally blows, which is a shame since it is stumbling distance from my front door. the only worse crust in the nabe is the pizza place near freddy's next to the middle eastern joint. that crust was awful.
  • Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong place, but I'm pretty sure I'm not. We ordered delivery from there, like, once. A long time ago. And never had any interest in revisiting the experience.

If the pizzas are small and floppy with sauce suspiciously like ketchup, or maybe tomato paste straight from a can, that's the place I'm thinking of.

ETA: Alafairnadia's post confirms that I am indeed thinking of Gino's. Ick.
  • and yes, the best drunk 2 a.m. food on washington is crown fried chicken (which I've nicknamed crack fried chicken). that place rules.

Gino's is straight-up nasty ass shit. Note my pizza and cleaning fluid experience:

    Yes!
  • Call me crazy, but I love Gino's and I love their crust. It's the only pizza crust I look forward to eating.
That windex business sounds disgustin, though.

*phew!* thought I was losing my mind...and my tastebuds there for a while :D

That's down the block from me, but I've avoided the place 'cause I've heard bad things... nothing specific, mind you... maybe they were just skeeved by the atmosphere... I should go, though, eh? Decent sides? Biscuits and whatnot?

I'm not sure they're highbrow enough to actually have sides as commonly defined in the restaurant industry. they have fries, and they'll put cheese and hot sauce on them if you pay $.50 extra. they have mashed potatoes, but I have not tried those. but yeah, I don't think I've ever approached that place with all of my mental faculties in the 'on' position, so aside from fried chicken and french fries, I'm not sure what else one can obtain there. probably egg rolls.
  • eh... okay, I'll try'em next time I'm three sheets to the wind...

What about late-night patties? I would think that that would make GREAT drunk food, but is anyone open late enough?

not that I know of... if you find out, please share your knowledge!! :)

The chicken is perfectly spiced and greasy but not too much. The mashed pototoes have a little seasoning in the gravy and are good also. They serve a heap o' shit at Crown: fish sandwiches, burgers, ice cream, popcorn shrimp. But I suggest stick with the snack/dinner boxes.
  • Subject: Candicissima & Chicken

Candicissima, I'm confused. I thought you were a vegetarian. I was just browsing and found this site so I just went to what I thought was your site http://www.theppk.com. Thought you had some interesting recipes but now I'm confused when you write "The chicken is perfectly spiced and greasy but not too much." Maybe I've confused you with someone else. If so, my bad.

PPK is Isa. Candicissima is an omnivore. And she looks slightly different than Isa.

Crown Fried Chicken makes Whitney and Bobby happy esp when it's freshly fried, yum! And there mac isn't bad either. Although sometimes if it's crowded it can be a little skeevy but mostly it's just me talking through the bullet proof plastic.
