Attempted car theft on 15th st bt 6-7th

Someone tried to break into my car sometime last week and then again last night when it was parked on 15th st between 6-7th aves (closer to 7th.) As of yesterday there was evidence of someone trying to slimjim my passenger door (unsuccessful as the doors were still locked and the car still present) and I just went to the car this morning and now the driver side shows the same evidence. So heads up to anyone that parks on that block.

And lets pray that the thieves don't get frustrated and break my windows next time.

  • Oh and its worth noting that my car has no antitheft or anything, and my boyfriend said that, judging from the damage, they were kids or someone totally unskilled because "it's not that hard to slimjim a car" (which I actually used to to do my old car a lot because I had messed up locks) They banged up my door jams pretty badly on the inside, no clear damage on the outside of the car.
  • That sucks. I am sorry you had to go thru that. What kinda car do you have if you don't mind my asking? Just curious cause I know they like to target Honda's. Much like my Honda Civic that was broken into. :(
  • Its a cheapy late model import (03, worth about 10k) Its not a super popular car, it must have been joyriding kids because theres no real reason someone couldn't have stolen it. Plus there is NOTHING in it to steal- i mean, NOTHING. No CDs, stock cd player, maybe an empty water bottle rolling around the back seat and a ball of rope in the trunk.
I think I'm going to try to park on a more well-lit block from now on
  • get the club
  • ^I was thinking about that. Even though you can saw through one in about 10 seconds, I figure it's a good deterrent to those kids who just want to joyride.
  • You don't happen to own a big van do you? I ask because a couple of days ago there was a van parked in the same location, illegally blocking one of those inclines in the middle of the street. There was a NYPD tow truck driver shimmying the drivers door as I guess he couldn't just tow the van.

Never mind... just noticed you already said it is not a van.
  • no its not a van, but two weeks ago I got towed out of that same spot (chalk it up to parking after a 14 hour drive back from NC) and when I went to pick up my car from the impound (with a ticket as well, i'll add) they told me that 4 other cars were towed from that spot in that ONE day so far (this was 2pm) I can't even imagine how many people are getting nailed there, I want to put up a sign "this is a crosswalk!"

Yep... I was watching the neighbors car when she was out of the country. I don't own a car, and the same unmarked indents are in front of my place on Prospect ave between 6th and 7th. Anyhow, I parked in front, got the car towed, and took me three days to get all the proper documentation to get the car out of the impound (as it was not my car). $400 later.

Funny thing is that I called the precinct before I knew the car was towed (I didn't know the license so couldn't tell if it was stolen or towed). They told me that cars usually never get towed for parking in front of those when they are in the middle of the street. Looks like things are changing.

I'm considering my good will community service task for the summer will be to invest in some red spray paint and clearly marking those as no parking areas.
  • Yellow paint, not red, just on the curb should suffice. Don't get a ticket doing it!
  • Someone should mark those things, I felt totally duped. It cost me over $300 when all was said and done with the ticket and everything.
