Not me! (See my upcoming novel, how I destroyed my knee)
The Park slop fitness collective (or something like that) actually has a program for beginner runners. -
Check in the windows of Slope Sports and Jackrabbit --they often post things about organized runs that attract all levels, even first time runners.
Also, Nike is starting to do weekly organized runs that will leave from Starbucks in Park Slope on Saturdays. I've run a lot of their runs out of Niketown, and they're great.
Again, all levels of runners at those too, plus they often have free running gear to give out. 9am saturdays, 164 7th ave. -

That's interesting, do you know how far the runs are?

They used to vary. Prolly 3-5 miles or so, varying paces.

Umm… I hope you don’t mind but I have a question that’s slightly off topic.
I woke up all nice and early today and thought I’d run in the park (rather than at Crunch on the treadmill). But I didn’t because I realized I had nowhere to stash my keys (where do you keep them when you run? Tied to your shoelaces??) and as a girl I didn’t know if it would be wise to run at 7am listening my iPod .
So, to folk who’ve done this crazy running outside thing, where do you keep your door key, and should I leave the music at home? -
It's plenty light out and the runners and dog-owners are out by 7am, so I wouldn't imagine the well-used roads and paths to be less safe than usual.
I keep a minimal set of keys for this sort of thing--no grocery or gym cards or mailbox and office keys attached--just what I need to get into my apt. That makes them easier to ties into my laces or just hold in my hand.
Some running shorts have a small pocket inside the waste band that is perfect to hold a key or two. I've never had anything fall out of this pocket nor has it been uncomfortable. -
i rubberband my key to my ipod; but I'm a guy, so that doesn't help you very much.
I saw someone running with keys pinned to their hat over the winter.
Or you could get one of those arm pouchy things to hold it.
I think that at 7am there should be a goodish amount of people in the park for it to be safe to run with music. If you are running late and night I would advise against the music. -
safety pin

Er, because girls don't have ipods?
Or rubberbands? -
The best thing is the pocket in the running shorts. I sometimes safety pin my keys to the inside of my shorts/pants. That is definitely the less desirable option. Not as comfortable and makes noise the entire run.

Safety Pin. Rubber band. 8) -

If my shorts don't have pockets (I try to buy the kind that have one zipper pocket just below the waistband in the middle of the back), I have an amphipod that I picked up at one of the local running stores. It works great for me. Check out the various "micropacks" at the link above. The little packs really keep things from jiggling around. -
Ahhh! A safety pin! Or rubber band to iPod! Now why didn't I think of that?!
Great ideas - thx! I guess there's no excuse for tomorrow - esp. as the weather at 7am should be pretty perfect.
Will check out the amphipod thingies if I decide that running outside is my kinda thang...
(I do think I might be a big old wimp when it comes to running outside so will see how it goes....!) -
Jackrabbit sells little holder-thingies that you can velcro through your shoelaces. I stash my keys in a plant under the stoop - super safe!
-
I used to run in shorts with a drawstring, and I'd simply tie them in the drawstring inside my shorts. As long as you don't have a janitor's sized keyring, its not a problem.

it made sense when i typed it. She asked about whether or not she should use an ipod. If there is no ipod then there is nothing to rubberband keys to. -
I'm still confused. Girls shouldn't run with ipods at 7am - is that it?

Should have been late at night
I've run at night and pass people wearing ipods who seemed to have no idea that i was approaching. I guess I could un-rubberband my keys from my ipod to signal my approach, but i just think it would be easier for nomad to leave the ipod at home when running late at night. -
Girls don't have rubberbands. They have Scrunchees.
-
If I have a drawstring in my shorts, I double knot it there. Otherwise, I loop the keys onto a rubberband (put the rubberband halfway through the keyhole and then pull in through). Then you can either run with it on your wrist, or loop the band and key around the front shoulder of your sports bra and tuck the key under. You never even feel it!

Or- you could take a whole bag of rubberbands and shoot them at people while coming up on them from behind in order to signal your approach.
But then Prospect Park will start to look like Park Slope streets with abandoned rubberbands all over the ground.
How about calling out "Hubba Hubba!" to signal yourself?
Wooden shoes?
A set of coconuts to knock together? -

great idea on the rubber band gun

now you can shoot those annoying ipod people. i mean signal them to move out of the way. -
When I was a kid I invented and manufactured a rubber-band weapon, consisting of a wooden spool of thread, a wooden Q-tip (back when there were wooden q-tips) a rubber band, and two staples.
Step 1: remove all thread from the spool, and all cotton from the Q-tip.
Step 2: Use a pencil sharpener to sharpen one end of the Q-tip.
Step 3: Cut the rubber band, so it's no longer a circle.
Step 4: Staple each end of the rubber band to the sides of one end of the spool.
Step 5: Insert the sharpened Q-tip backwards into the spool, and seat in the rubber band.
Step 6: Pull back the rubber band, and then release.
That will let the ipod-carrying joggers know you're coming!!
