Warning - Union Market dairy

I thought someone had died.
Although it's not a good thing this yogurt was on the shelf, I'd venture to guess it's the exception not the rule, and if you took it back, they'd give you a new one. -
I'd forgive them for a short-term slip like that. By the way, yogurt is usually good for a while after its sell-by date, so it might just be your paranoia that it tastes weird.
Take it back, UM will give you a new one, they're very nice there. -
a little alarmist for a few days. Please just return it and save the histrionics for a real concern.
-
yeah... what is the big deal? We ordered from Fresh Direct this week and the quiche that came was moldy. Ech! E mailed them and they credited us the amount and apologized. Big deal!!
-
My co-workers said I was being ridiculous too, until they smelled it. I think it must have come in when it was really hot outside or something.
At any rate, I'm not sounding the alarm thinking I am dying, just putting it out there for everyone to check their dairy products before buying, that's all. -
Just 12 exclamation points is all
-
I suppose I do overuse the !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

april 27th was the SELL BY date, not the EAT BY date.
yogurt is indeed fine for a few days after.
for the most part, union market is a terrific store. your post seems a bit ridiculous. trying to sabatoge a lovely neighborhood market? -
Indeed it was the sell by date- which I never would have checked had it not tasted like old sour nastiness.
Not trying to sabotage - I love UM! Just a warning to check the dates before purchasing to avoid ridiculous posts and uneaten snacks! -
Everyone knows to check dates in supermarkets as well as drug stores.
-
And the vets office/pet store for food and meds.
-
Subject: expired yogurt
just mix in some salt, it will be fine... -
unopened yogurt can last for months after the sell-by date. when it goes bad it just gets moldy.
-
Moldy dairy aside, has UM done anything to improve the attitude of their cashiers?
I went a few times when they first opened and was appalled at the lack of simple courtesy (i.e. not getting off the cell phone call while ringing me up...and talking about how somebody is stupid did not seem like a critical call to me) so even if they had non-bad yogurt, I haven't gone back.
Has there been any improvement? -

i would say "yes". i've been in there a few times recently, and i haven't had any brush-offs from the cashiers.

It's unethical of Union Market to sell expired yogurt. Some people do not have good eye sight.
-
Not so sure about the 'tudes. I was walking by the one on 7th Avenue and one of the cashiers was outside on the sidewalk screaming into her phone and holding a work schedule saying "Bitch is only working until three!" I'm sure her manager would have loved that friendly face to the public.
-
the cashiers have gotten nicer in my experience, they got rid of a bunch of the bitchy ones. The meat/deli counter people are also really friendly now.
-
The customer service is only OK at best at UM, but this is NYC, so what do you expect? I also think that this board could be filled with stories of things sold at Key Food, UM, Fresh Direct, Fairway, etc that is not up to snuff. It happens and I doubt it is a big conspiracy to put one over on the consumer.

I bought a carton of buttermilk I needed for a recipe and it was 5 days past its sell by date. Every time I go to UM there is always someone working near the dairy case so I would think they would be more careful. I don't care how long something is good for past it's date it shouldn't be on the shelves. That's not what I'm paying for.
The cashiers are more pleasant at C-Town and the 5th ave Key Food. -

Agree with all of the above.
