I found the tampons in bodega discussion interesting, and would hate to see that sort of thing leave. *shrug* But whatever.

    Divisive.

    Bombastic.

I like rainbows, not separatists. The colors are meant to blend together.
Not leaving- just moving. Girls love rainbows, too. And I'm sure there will be many "colors."

This is why I see this as a separate entity. Think of it this way: You go to the Brooklynian site, hang there, post your posts, then go to Chicklynian where you can let your hair down. Or in Davers case, lurk for tampons threads. Speaking of lurkers, there is a larger world out there watching us, it's not just the 50 or so hard cores making up this site. Think about them too. Maybe they're waiting for the right moment, the right thread....welcome you cutie pies. Come out come out wherever you are!
Eh. I'm not lurking anywhere. I did find the discussion about why bodegas keep the tampons behind the counter interesting, and I'm not ashamed of that. *shrug*

As long as you are going to do girl only forums, how about a whites only forum? Or blacks only? How about an under twenty only? Or a drinker only? One thing I liked about Brooklynian was being able to talk to all sorts of Brooklyn folk, from old timers with property, to old timers without. From newcomers with big bucks fleeing Manhattan rents, to newcomers stretching to survive looking for somewhere cheap. Boys, girls, all races, everyone. I think it is a little sad to see it start to break out like this.
  • I'm all for Tampon talk, but I think everyone should be included. Maybe this forum could help bridge the gender gap. I also have dabled in some Manpon usage on occasion.

I think you're overreacting a bit. Nothing's happening to Brooklynian! You can still talk to the Brooklyn folk! No one is being forced to move to Girl Town or stay away from it. I really sorry you're sad, Daver, but it's really not the end of the world, folks!
  • i'm with daver: forums based on interests (e.g. food, fitness, whatever) seem really different to me than ones based on identity. skeeves me out a little, frankly.

so daver: watched any good douche ads lately?

Two young boys walk into a pharmacy one day, pick out a box of Tampax and proceed to the checkout counter.

The man at the counter asks the older boy, "Son, how old are you?"

    "Eight," the boy replies.

The man continues, "Do you know what these are used for?"

"Not exactly," the boy says. "But they aren't for me. They're for him. He's my brother. He's four. We saw on TV that if you use these you would be able to swim and ride a bike. Right now he can't do either one."
  • Whatchuwant wrote: Hi there- sorry for the delay!

Ok- so what I see is a place just for the ladies of Brooklyn. Think of a little bit Jezebel, a little Brooklynian, mixed with us. A salon of sorts, snark allowed (as long as it doesn't get personal), smoking in the girls bathroom, talk about everything we want to without the boys (ie- bras, our periods). Sections I see: Mommies, Single, Lesbian, Beauty, Gossip, Career, etc. More ideas for these sections are more than welcome!
    Ah, gotcha.

Well, save for the fact that I actually don't care for Jezebel, I actually don't think a section germane to women is a bad idea....

...and to address the "why do we need to segregate things" questions? Honestly, there are some things that would seem more germane to women's interests (OB/GYN recommendations, for one), and having them in one spot would at least be a convenient thing, anyway. We can also have a "Guylinian" as well, maybe, to even things up.

I probably wouldn't use it for gossiping, more like just references and research ("where in Fort Greene can I get a DivaCup" kind of things).

Sorry you're skeeved. I did discuss this with DH do to it as a separate site altogether, however he wanted to start it as a main thread. I agreed to see how the response would be.

This feminist [points at self] wouldn't do that, actually.
  • As a side point: We had discussed starting a Health board. A lot of woman issues would probably fit there. Just an idea.

i'd actually be less bothered by the chicklynian idea if there were also a boys' room, rather than women's vs. regular.

i'd also be less bothered by chicklynian as a completely separate site. i don't have a problem with women's space per se.

in my HO, this idea would work better if we had tags or cross-posting, so that those who want to look at all the lady talk threads at once can do so, but those threads don't have to be in purdah.
  • Whatchuwant wrote: Sprite- true, but Cosmo sucks.
    Fair point. :)

    Love this.

I'm not against the idea of a women's issues forum; some folks have friends close by, but others don't, and this could help them to meet other Brooklyn women and set up all-girls Sex-and-the-City-esque brunch dates.

That said, aside from OB/GYN stuff, I'm not sure what female-centric topics couldn't go on the main boards. Maybe this is a case of "If you build it, they will come." I'll be curious to see what develops.
  • would people be offended if I posted a new topic in here? am I going to get flamed?
  • Go for it!
  • done and done.

not to sound like a broken record, but this is a high priority issue. this will require development work. still waiting for the super-gifted web app developer to drop out of the sky.

i hadnt specified feminists. or even females for that matter.

i thought it easier than using race religion or ethnicity as the example.

on the one hand im totally cool with it and support it.

on the other hand i think it makes a small contribution to (or is indicative of)
the ever growing momentum of the centrifuge that has
insidiously taken over the melting pot of america.
  • Shouldn't we just have separate forums for everything then - women, men, singles, marrieds, gays, parents, grandparents, non-parents, separate races, ages and religions????

That is the only way to really be fair... and then we're just creating more division.

Honestly, if male Brooklynians are upset with women discussing nail salons or threading on the regular boards, they don't have to read those posts! And what is so wrong with a polite post asking if someone has a good Ob/Gyn recommendation? We wouldn't stop a man posting about a prostate issue.

me either. its the "lets segregate ourselves" thing that i find odd.

coming up soon ....jewlynian, afrilynian , spalynian, kolynian,
    and the ever popular
    whitemaleinfantinabarlynian
  • Can we at least change the name? Chicklynian is degrading.
  • I like the Singles forum idea. We have every other forum now, maybe I'll meet the Mrs. out in Brooklynian Land.

I don't think it was put forth as a response to male Brooklynians being upset, I think it was put forth as female Brooklynians wanting to be elistist. Er, separate. But equal. Some animals are more equal than others. Your mileage may vary.

I'm going to root for subwaypisserlynian, but just because I want to read the articles.

sorry DH -- didn't mean to sound broken-record-ish, either. i <3 your site, just as it is. :D
  • Not a good idea. My 2 cents.

...By that logic, you could say that the whole of Brooklynian is "elitist" because we are Brooklyn-centric, are we not? I mean, we've set up a separate section of the Internet that's only about Brooklyn!...

But that's ridiculous, of course -- I'm sure everyone also checks out YouTube, Metafilter, Google, MySpace, etc., etc., etc., as well, and this is just for the every now-and-then moments of "eh, I want to hang out with people who understand the same references I do for a little while, then I'll go back out to the general public."

This is the same thing -- it's only when people want to hang out with people just like them ALL the time that it's elitist, but doing so just now and then just makes them...human. And this is one of many kinds of wavelengths that certain people share is all.
  • I don't care eitherway all in all, I can see SweetT's point of view and W's.
But damn, it sure did give me a whole lotta time wasting fun today
