First new topic! Pedi help...

I posted this in the PS board but I really am just curious-

I stubbed my toe last night and tore my big toenail pretty badly. It's still hanging on but its going to look like shit if it comes off. Can a pedicurist fix this? Can they acrylic it on or something? I've never had a mani or pedi before (or any nail treatment, actually) so I don't know how these things work but it's going to get stuck on something and rip off if I don't do something soon.

Halp. Its going to look so craptastic if it rips off, I won't be able to stand it.

  • don't do it. I don't ever go get a pedi with open cuts on my feet. Let it heal by itself before you think of getting a pedi. No matte how sterile the place seems, you don't want to be putting you foot in their foot baths or having instruments etc. used on it.
  • its not cut i dont think. there's nothing open, its just ripped really short on one side. I thought maybe they could do a silk wrap or something on it?
  • I've had them repair broken nails before with glue and a bit of acrylic. costs like $2 or something extra at bloomie's at 23rd & 7th in manhattan
  • ok so it is possible. Im thinking of just going to the place on 7th bt 15-16 (because its next door to my apartment.)
  • I get silk wraps on my fingers, but never had to do any cosmetic toe repair. I feel ya, though. My toes are always polished and pretty. If my big toe was gonna fall off, I'd be pissed

Oh dear, you've had a rough month sweetie. I feel for you!
Listen, go to the walk-in clinic on Clinton and Atlantic and let a doc see you and alleviate any pressure you might have under the nail. (had this happen to GF). They'll wrap it up, give you any pain killers or drugs. The nail might fall off all on it's own due to the shock of the injury, depends on how bad it is. Eitherway, the nail will grow back just fine and look normal again. Just make sure you keep it clean and free of infection. You'll be fine trust me.
Papi had this happen to his thumb, but that was a bad injury and he lost the nail, but now it looks like new.
  • ^haha thanks for the condolences, and tell me about it! Cut my damn finger off, then the ebola flu and the car getting towed, and now the toenail. But honestly it's not that bad, it's not all the way to the nailbed or anything, I think it's purely cosmetic.
  • Yeah, I'm beginning to suspect something along the lines of hypocondria, but just in case it's a real problem, I suggest crazy glue. Apparently that's what they use on Chien Ming Wang and he's been pitching well.

I also have to back up flexichick on this. I don't ever go in for pedicures anymore because of the disease and infection issues. They can't run the footspa through an autoclave. Apparently by age 45 50% of the US population has a nail infection. The meds that get rid of them are so harsh for your liver that many doctors refuse to prescribe them. And just for added fun, when I lived in california there was an outbreak of flesh eating virus that women got from the footspas at a very high end salon. Seems no matter how hard they scrub, that stuff stays alive in the water. In fact a nice warm bath is the perfect incubation ground for such things. Ewww.
  • hypochondria? I never said the toenail needed medical assistance- it's purely aesthetic, hence the question about a pedicure not a podiatrist.
  • If it's just a little mend then I've done some things myself to fix it. I've taken gauze or silk and cut it into a little square. Add a little bit of clear nail polish to the broken nail section, quickly, with tweezers, place the square on the break like a patch. Then add a drop of crazy glue on top. After it dries you can file it down a little and add another patch or nail polish. Good luck chica.
  • ok in case anyone cares...
I ran to cvs and got some gel nail glue and glued that sucker back on. it feels bumpy but is hard as nails, we'll see if it lasts. My toenail is saved!
  • yay! phew

I would never take those anti-fungal medications. I discovered, quite by accident, an effective remedy for dermatological fungal infections. And it's non-toxic! Get some pure aloe gel from the drugstore and then put it in a warm bath and soak the offending member in it for at least 20 minutes. (Or soak the rest of you in it as well. Does no harm and it's relaxing.) The fungus will literally crawl out from under the nail and die on the floor. Aloe is a very effective fungicide and it's way cheaper than those toxic medications. I've even used it on my cat when he had a fungal infection that was causing him to go bald on the top of his head. Slapped some aloe gel on the bald spot and hair started growing back the very next day.

    :lol::lol::lol:

I can only imagine how happy your cat was!! Let's face it, humiliation doesn't come easy to our feline friends!

Pictures - or it didn't happen!
  • I don't think he was humiliated because it was on the top of his head and cats don't look at themselves in the mirror. I think he would have been humiliated had the infection spread and he started to go bald where he could see it.

He was more confused: What is this cold goop on my head?
