Another chicky question- eyebrows folks
Again, cross posted from the Park Slope board...
My eyebrows need some help- I've never gotten them groomed before and they're not totally out of control but I think they need a professional touch. Anyone have any suggestions? PS or something off the F preferred (carroll gardens, downtown etc) I know Slope Suds has some famous brow woman but it's like $45 and I just can't bring myself to spend that.
Note that I have a bad taste in my mouth about waxing when a former room-mate came home with literally half an eyebrow after a botched job. She had to draw them in for weeks. I'm scrrd.

Take the F train to 23rd St in Manhattan. There's a good threading place near the subway station ...upstairs....on the west side..can't remember if it's 22-23rd St or 23-24th.
Eyebrow threading is cheap - like $6 and well worth it -
i swear by Mayuri at Trini salon on 23rd and broadway. it is $15 but worth every penny. i know like 8 people who get threading done by her, and every single person emerges with the perfect brow shape for their facet. it lasts me for months, and i have *massive* brows. IMHO it is worth it to pay slightly more than the $6 places...the $6 places give every single person the same eyebrows.

It's called Unique, and they rock. 727 6th, 2nd floor between 23rd/24th. 212.929.1410. They also have a second location 266 West 23rd, 2nd floor, corner of 8th Ave.
Threading doesn't hurt (me, at least), and they are super fast-you don't even get a chance to take your coat off! They also do "sugaring" with is waxing, except with just sugar, so it's not sticky like wax and is supposed to hurt less. I got it done when I had my brazilian. It wasn't that much less painful than waxing, but I'm a total wimp when it comes to cleaning up the downstairs, you know? But that's cheap too, like $35, as opposed to $50 and up for waxing.
I'm so overdue it's not even funny. I'm going there this week, Carmen if you want to take a field trip. -
I actually don't know what threading is. I see signs for it all the time, but have no clue. Does it hurt?

does threading take longer than waxing? Im a huge pussy when it even comes just to plucking my brows

I'm not going to lie to you, it doesn't feel Good. it takes at least 15 minutes on me (due to my massive brows) and i have red skin for hours afterwards, but then again, i did after waxing as well. i discovered a severe allergy to waxing that led me to try sugaring (didn't work one bit on me) and then threading. -
I don't find threading to be that painful... the noise is a little strange (like plucking a string) and it stings briefly when they pull the hairs, but it is over quickly, and I guess I would liken it to the feeling of a rubber band (a small one) snapping... (then again, I have small eyebrows and only get them "cleaned up" rather than a lot taken off). my skin is red for a few hours usually, but I found putting a bit of aloe on it makes it go away quickly.
But that's just my experience. -

I think plucking hurts more than waxing or threading, combined. -
PErsonally, threading hurts like hell. But overall, this method results in a better brow job because you can get the angles better than just slapping on some wax and the tape yanking off what you dont want. There is a threading place on the corner of Fulton St and the little street after Lafayette Ave if you are heading downtown bklyn. Her name is Rita and you might have to wait a little as she does great business, but for 5 to 10 dollars she does an excellent job.

Try The Home Spa in Brooklyn. It's on Court Street between Douglas & Degraw. Maria is the brow expert and has been keeping mine in shape for 4 yrs. She's the best. They have a website too. Check 'em out.

I have been going to maria for EIGHT YEARS at the homespa and I adore her. I don't let anyone else touch my brows, and she has a herd of devotees that come from all over. AMAZING WORK. and she does great facials...
-
^hmmm she's $33....but I'm thinking maybe it'll be worth it and then i can either touch it up myself or get it threaded/waxed by someone cheaper to keep the maintenance?
-
Oh my god. I didn't realize that. I wonder if that's for the first shaping. Wow...I think the follow up with her is less, I don't think I pay that (but then again, the last time I went was my wedding in september, and i just maintain, and I am going the 16th)
She is getting married after the 16th so get in before then.
ETA: the reason she is so good is that she doesnt' overdo it at all...she truly works with your face and her clients don't all look the same. And she maintains a more natural look (but looking at wedding pics I do see a much better brow than I have now!) -
crap I have to go towards the end of the month (big event the beginning of June) I wonder when she comes back from her honeymoon... perhaps I should give a call.

Cure Beauty Bar on Clinton & Fulton
take the F to the C at Jay st. to Clinton/Washington, exit at the back of the train (Clinton exit)

I second the Rita recommendation. She's a bit on the crazy side, but you walk out looking like a new person (literally).
-
Good luck, no matter where you wind up! let us know if you do meet maria, she's great.
-
Am I the only one here who actually enjoys eyebrow plucking? I actually look forward for the little stubs to come back just to have something to pinch at.
And does anyone else here ever get white eyelashes...like 5 or 6 in the bunch? -
Can someone give me better directions to the place where Rita works? I know where Fulton and Lafayette meet but what cross street is it?
-
Rita's place is called Rita's Eyebrows...it's right outside the G train stop at Lafayette Street, on the corner. You cannot miss it - right on the corner with a huge handpainted "eyebrow" sign right over the door. She's been there forever.
-
I just met Maria after searching for a new eyebrown person for a year or so. (She had a lot to work with
She did an amazing job. She took a lot of time and she did something no one else has ever done. She asked me to sit up at the end. Makes sense but no one ever does that.
I feel like I have my eyebrows back after several years of getting them manhandled by random inept people then just giving up.
Howdy, Stranger!
