Fellow Heighters:
Over the months MANY of you have expressed opposition to the Ratner plan. Many of you would like to see it go away and replaced with a better plan for the yards.
This message is for you. Its time to stop bloggin' (for a second) and ante up. Without enough funds for a legal fight, and continued political pressure, chances are slim that the plan can be defeated or radically altered.
Much of the work DDDB and other opponents have done is starting to pay off, with poltical sentiment turning (Councilman Yassky is now opposed, Assembly members Millman and Brennan now opposed. Assemblyman Roger Green just today, on the record at a public hearing said that the neighborhood is NOT blighted. blight will be the argument the state will use to justify eminent domain. the public scoping hearing was packed with public opposition. ) There have been calls to scale down the project, and Mr. Green, our Assemblyman, just today told me that if the project is not scaled down, it will NOT be approved. (remains to be seen what scaled down means.) Last night (nov. 4) a pretty favorable piece aired on the Newshour with Jim Lehrer. The "done deal" aura is losing its sheen.
Whats my point? As I said above its time to ante up as we move ahead over the next months into the courts. Many of you may think that DDDB is loaded. that is far from the truth. DDDB to date has been entirely dependent on small contributions from the community and volunteer work from many people. our expenses are about to rise dramatically as things will soon move into the legal phase.
Its time to give and give as much as you think you can afford. It will be one of the most important investments you've made in our very fine and beloved neighborhood.
Its easy. Click here to donate to the dailyheights walkathon team And sign up to walk, and you can easily seek pledges from your friends, family, neighbors and colleagues. If you have already signed up for the walkathon or donated to a walker, fantastic. If you are opposed to the project, but have not done so its time to get off the dime and get involved. Its easy and quick.
And come out on Nov. 13 to join your neighbors in the walk led by Grand Marshal Rosie Perez.
see you there and see you at paypal.
all funds will go to the Develop Don't Destroy Brooklyn legal fund.
thank you,
Daniel Goldstein

thanks dan h.
now, you can either join the dailyheights team here
this means you plan to walk and also solicit donations from friends, family,
colleagues.
OR you can simply donate here. Joining the team and walking
is preferred (and viral) but all donations are welcome and appreciated. -
This is a very good cause and all, but do we really need three separate threads about it?

i understand that 3 threads might be annoying. but nobody responded (by donating or signing up) to the other threads. so i did one more that laid out the urgent need to pony up, and so far a few people have finally responded.
by the way, i don't know why i posted "see you at pay pal" all donations can be made at http://www.dddb.net/walkathon -

That's all nice and fine, but please keep it to one thread. -

Ok, now that I know there is such a rule, I can abide by it. -

Hey I did. But I gave the money to your sister's team. -
What if I want to destroy Brooklyn and turn it into a vertical suburb?
Did you even think about that?
Can anyone direct me to Ratner's walkathon??? -
I wanted to donate $20, and the page won't let me donate less than $25. Am I missing something (besides the will to donate $25)?
Oh, and for those interested in the Ratnerville Walkathon, the link below has directions for the starting point:

yes, it starts at 640 Pacific Street. and they've already raised $5 million for themselves.

trying to fix the site to allow donations of less than 25. will let you know when that happens.

Ah. Found the link: http://buildbrooklyn.org/. From the site: "Faith and Prayer Works!!"
I bet a lot of people were praying for a bigger mall and more minimum wage/no benefits jobs for this to happen... -

Tis me who posteth above. -
Here's a suggestion for the walkathon organizers.
If you live in the area where Flatbush, Atlantic and Fouth Avenues interset you already know one thing...
TRAFFIC IS ALREADY INSANE!!!
It's bad enough for the cars, but if you're a pedestrian, you're taking your own life in your own hands.
Seeing that this event focuses around walking against the Ratner-ville contingent, perhaps somehow integratting a a real world example of how the neighborhood is already congested would help. A 'bonus' for safely crossing the street?
In my personal experience, anyone who attempts to cross the Flatbush, Atlantic and Fouth Avenue triangle knows in an instant how overdevelopment is bad and dangerous. -
Subject: walk route
Jack, the walkathon route is here
c'mon Ratner opponents sign up to walk with the dailyheights team i set up.
even if you can't donate any money, you can still sign up and join your neighbors in walking.
and at that link above it is fast and easy to send emails to raise funds from friends, family etc... -

Got it and saw it, but I think you've missed the point of my note.
The route completely avoids the Atlantic/Flatbush/Fourth Avenue Junction just a block away. I see this as a big mistake. With the malls right nearby, having the walkathon passby the shoppers and retailers would send a message. Also, crossing the streets there is doable, but not pleasant and would further emphasize the craziness of the Ratner plan.
I think the Prospect Heights community that the walkathon goes through is already well set in their goals and knowledge of Ratner and what this plan means. I think expanding outwards by one block onto Atlantic Avenue itself will help spread the message to others outside of the immediate area. -

I do understand you Jack. planning to do what you suggest, while a great idea, would have been very difficult to do with the police department's permission, which we needed.
it is a good idea though, but too late to change, i think. i'll see if its possible to change. -

This one's easy: just pay your taxes for the next three decades or so, and you'll be supporting Ratner handsomely.

or pay 700 for court side seats. -
I can't wait until this project is up and running. I think that D. Goldstein's group is just mad that good old Bruce Ratner has decided to deal with minority groups "Black Folks" in the area. The Minority groups just want to get their people what they deserve.

hey dheights administrators can you get rid of this troll? -
Dan,
I think that you're about to find out who your true allies are. Criticizing Ratner over pints of beer, posting on web sites, or attending on occasional rally is one thing, but actually reaching into one's wallet and forking over hard-earned cash is beyond the loyalty of most people. If this thread is any indication, then you're in for quite a challenge. Your post received 22 respones, seven of which were written by you and one accidentally duplicated by another poster. That's less response than the recent posts on zipcar, kittens, or mice. Hell, the post on eggs and Halloween got four times the response than this post did.
The elections are another matter. With the obvious exception of Tish, every candidate endorsed by NoLandGrab is going to get trounced in today's elections. Things are looking grim.
All together now: "This isn't even remotely a done deal." -

Truly. Enough with the trolls. Signal to noise is important in such a small community, and letting this problem go on alters the balance. It scares potential new folks away, too. If someone wants to lurk, fine, but banning IPs would keep those with bad intent out.
I wholly realize that this is not my sandbox, so I don't have a say in the rules, but at least I know not to throw sand in the other kids' faces... -
I think Ratner rules too!

Oh when someone has their own opinion and they disagree with you then you want them out. What the hell ever BRUCE RATNER RULES and what he is doing in our area is great. We need change. The Atlantic Terminal mall that he built has done wonders for us in Brooklyn and the Arena will do the same.
