Mother's day gift for a breast cancer patient
Subject: Mother's day gift for a breast cancer patient
Hey Ya'll...I don't know if this new section, Chicklynian, is the correct place to post this... but it's a post about breasts so I figured it was ok. :-p
My mother is currently in treatment for breast cancer. They caught the cancer early and she getting chemo once every 2 weeks. She's tolerating the chemo VERY well and seems to be doing fine, but she's having the normal side effects; hair loss, darkening of nail beds, etc etc.
I wanted to get her some thing really nice for mother's day, but I'm kind of at a loss. i was going to get her a massage, but I think you have to go to a specially trained masseuse to deal with the lymph issues and stuff. I was going to get her a spa day, but I think she's kind of self conscious about some of the skin side effects.
Has anyone else had a family member who had cancer. Was there a particular gift that you felt was really useful and cherished.
thanks ya'll!

How about a donation in her name to a cancer research group? And some time together to celebrate the fact that they caught this so early.

Buy her a lovely outfit and spring hat and take her out to eat. Maybe a Mother's day brunch. My mom would love that...

Hi there,
Memorial Sloan-Kettering has an Integrative Medicine service that offers all different kinds of massages for cancer patients. The link is above.
Here is the pdf schedule:

Thanks for the responses everyone! I would take her out to brunch... but she's in Indiana and I'm in Brooklyn. :-( The gift probably won't reach her until after Mother's day... but that's ok. She knows I'm a crummy daughter. :-p I know her oncology center in Indiana has massage, but she was thinking about checking to see if her insurance would cover it. I guess I"ll take a look and maybe get her a session or 2 now even if her insurance does cover the subsequent sessions.
Any other suggestions? -
I think you should MAKE her something special, like a scrapbook of photos of the two of you together. And/or assemble a "spa-at-home kit"- containing a CD of soothing music, aromatherapy candles, bath fizz and lotions...
And I second the suggestion that one of the above posters made about making a donation in her name to some organization (not necessarily a cancer org, but any cause she is passionate about). -
Does she have a favorite comedian? Buy some DVDs of her favorite comedian performing.
It's good therapy.
