No but Carroll Gardens was. There is a restaurant on Carroll bet. Nev. and 3rd that used to be a big mob hang out. Rumor was the Gowanus Canal has lots of "cement shoes" in it.
I'm thoroughly baffled where he learned this...did park slope used to be a mafia haven? -
Park Slope was absolutely mobbed up. As the decades progressed the faces changed. Capone was born on Garfield between 4th & 5th. I believe Joe Gallo (Crazy) hung out on 5th Ave around Carroll I believe. I remember seeing a social club on Union. You can still see them on 5th and 3rd Aves.

Early in his career John Gotti lived on 6th st.
-
the funny thing is there is a place on 5th, right off of Carroll, that used to be a social club and still has the sign. i dont know if he still does, but John Ventimiglia used to rent/own(?) it. John Ventimiglia was on the Sopranos.

I think there was a point where Park Slope, Cobble Hill and Carrol gardens were all in competition as to which neighborhood really was Da Mob neighborhood. Now.. I think PS loses the competition.

They all do. Even the Crew in Dyker Heights is moving to Staten Island. -

For the most part, the crew in Dyker Heights is either dead or in jail... -
Subject: mob in PS
They are still here. All old neighborhood residents know where they reside, or probably reside. They never show themselves nor get involved in Park Slope affairs. They have been neutral in Park Slope, and the proof is during the 70's and 80's, there was a huge amount of crime in PS, so obviously, they didn't get involved ... a.k.a, as they did in the G. Village and Carrol Gardens.
All organized crime is inherently bad for society, and is a product of public corruption and moral apathy. -

unless you are talking about the low-level thugs, the high level members never let their neighborhoods go to shit. they are usually very well taken care of and crime (non-organized) is usually non-existant.

Park Slope back in the seventies was definitely mobbed up.
There was the bar that LuLu ran, and there was lefty.
The old corner hardware store on union street & 7th Avenue that was run by the three brothers was a mob front for selling drugs.
There was also an old men's clothing store on the other corner of Union and 7th, where the optician's store now is, that was also a front.
I remember stories that my father told me. How the last two tables in the old Purity was always empty. they were "reserved" for meetings by "The Boys".
Here's an old story. This happened in the mid-sixties. My grandfather's house, in Bay Ridge, was broken into, and my grandmother, my Aunt, and my two grand Aunts were tied up. The crooks kept yelling at them to show them where my grandfather's safe was. Only, my grandfather never had a safe. They called up someone, stated that there was no safe in the house. The crooks then robbed my family.
About 3 weeks later, the broken noses came to my grandfather, and stated that they could get back the stuff that was stolen from him. My grandfather told them to go to hell. He had reported it to the police. If the stuff was gone, it was gone.
Never, ever, become indebted to those guys. Like in the soprano's, they will rob you blind. -

You reminded me of another story. This was during the Gallo wars. My father used to have a contractor that was booking numbers during this time period. He used to write the bets on the 2x4's in the apartments. Anyway, after Crazy Joe was bumped off, "The Boys" visited my father's contractor, and told him that they were back and to stop booking numbers. They told him once, they told him twice, the third time: they held him down on the floor, positioned his jaw, and smashed it with the boot heel of a shoe. He had to have his whole jaw rewired.
Needless to say, he stopped booking numbers. -
Were "The Fellas" in the Slope during the mid to late '70's? I remember from 5th Ave to 6th Ave, from 20th Street to 2nd it was mostly black, Puerto Rican and Irish. From 1st Street on to Flatbush, 1st Street between 5th and 7th Aves being one of the toughest blocks, it was a motorcycle club called the 69ers. I remember seeing the Pinstripes between 5th Ave and Court. except for some hangouts like Al's Toyland, Villa Gulia and a few bars.

Well, I'm sure you remember the old Brownstone Car Service?
The owner, after Eddie, was Brownstone Paulie. Paulie's last name was Persico.
We actually received rent checks from the personal account of Alfonce"Ali Boy" Persico.
Ali Boy used to live in Bay Ridge, two blocks away from my Grandfather's old house. What a christmas display on their lawn every year. -

I believe Paulie was Jewish. Associated through marraige. He came with two sidekicks named Scott and Sandy. Also Jewish. Brownstone was a soap opera from begining to end. It will ake a great book and movie.

Paulie may have been jewish, but we still received the rent checks from Mr. Persico himself.
Your right about 5th Avenue. When I started investing down there in the mid 90"s, what garbage those buildings were. There used to be a pizzaria where Al Di La currently is located. Anyway, that pizzaria, Nick's Pizzaria ironically, was part of an FBI sting operation in the early 80's.
The owner was a character, he actually complained once, I heard him, that the changing of the area was killing his business. He stated, and I'm paraphassing, that the drug addicts were his best customers, and now he was losing his most secure source of income.
5th Avenue was wild. An old time resident there once told me that, by accident, in the 80's, a puerto rican kid ,unknowingly, had disrespected one of "The Boys" and according to him, the guy actually picked the kid up, and threw him in front of the 5th Avenue bus, killing him. When the police came by, despite there being over 20 people outside at the time, nobody saw anything.
Dodge City had nothing compared to around here back then. -
Well, I moved here in 1988 and yes, 5th Avenue was mega rough! I never saw anyone get thrown in front of a bus-but, man oh man, what I used to see at JJ Byrne Park on 5th and 3rd when I would take my dog there at night!

My father in law who was Irish and an entertainer who played piano at dinners and special occasions in the 50ths ,was hired to play at the Dixie Tavern on 5th ave and 20th st.
The establishment was owned by Toto Marino a Mob boss, It was a for the birthday dinner for one of the boys.
Dinner was served ,gifts were given and my Father in law along with his partner started to entertain.
After twenty minutes of entertaining one of the boys approached them and advised them Mr Marino would like to see them in his private office.
Upon entering the office they were told to take off all their clothes, after complying with the request they asked why and were advised , someone stole an expensive watch from the guest and they wanted to make sure it wasn't them.
The bar door was locked and everyone was searched , the watch was found in the coat of one of the boys.
Mr Marino apologized to my Farther in law and his partner for any embarrassment or inconvenience they were subjected to and gave them an additional $200.00 each above their normal fee.
When asked what happened to the thief and would he work there again, his reply was I don't want to know and would you -

Actually, I wonder if there were two Pauls. One being the owner the other being the manager. The one I'm talking about was short, 50ish, built like a fire hydrant, wore glasses.
