Invisible shooting: Sterling Schenectady — Brooklynian

Invisible shooting: Sterling Schenectady

Caught a shooting on Saturday buried in a story about a different killing in Queens:
The second killing took place in Brooklyn, where a man identified as Saquan Toler, 21, was found shot three times at the corner of Schenectady Avenue and Sterling Place in Crown Heights shortly after 10 p.m., the police said. He was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital Center. There were no arrests in that case, the police said on Sunday.

What, these things are so common they don't even bear mentioning? I think not. I haven't managed to find any other references to it.

  • Haven't you gotten the memo? Black life is cheap and the mention of it is only parenthetical. If the victim had been white...now that's news.
  • Yea, Bassplaya, I agree. Take Sean Bell, for instance. His death received no media coverage whatsoever. Such a shame.
  • Look Guest, Sean Bell was news because 1) he was killed by the police and 2) because of the number of shots that were fired at him. BassPlaya is correct that the stories of black and Latino boys and men shooting and killing one another are rarely reported as "news". In the NYPost they are usually relagated to a line or two in the police blotter if that.
  • That's a great corner!

I think I would run out of fingers and toes if I counted the number of violent crimes that have occured in that area. Just recently we had the guy who got shot in his car on Utica and Park, the gunpoint robbery of the tattoo parlor on Utica, the guy who got stabbed i/f/o 1409 St. Johns, and the shooting in the subway that left a kid looking at lifetime paralysis. Oh, I forgot about the gunpoint robbery of Frederick's of Brooklyn in which they tied up the employees of store.
  • Hey wait didn't the Pharmacy on Flatbush ave and Sterling place get Robbed today and shots were fired?
