Who has better quality fish -- Ocean Fish Market or Park Slope Seafood? I'm partial to OFM but I'm curious to hear others' views.

  • Fish Tales
  • I'd go to Blue Moon at the GAP Farmer's Market or Park Slope. I've had bad experiences with Fish Tales. Twice I bought shellfish, stored them in my fridge, in a pasta bowl with a wet paper towel on top, and twice they all died within a day. They're supposed to last three to four days min, a week max. Fairway is good as well.
  • I've had great luck with the Farmer's Market Day boat, Fairway, and Fish Tales.

As far as Park Slope places, I haven't been overly impressed. Granted, i haven't been to either place ina year, so perhaps they've changed but both smell overly used to smell overly fishy. I'd love for someone who has shopped there recently to tell me otherwise...
  • Since it's such close proximity to me, I've honestly only bought fish at Natural Land. What do folks think of the fish there?
  • The Blue Moon fish vendors at the GAP green market are the best by far.
  • Natureland has good fish, very fresh because they have a high turnover. But Blue Moon rules !!!
  • I go to natural land. I see them hauling the fish into the place pretty often so that makes me feel better about buying there.

    they have decent prices too.
  • I think I have given up on local fish mongers. I buy at Fairway or order from Fresh Direct (same difference I suppose).

I have lived in the Slope for 28 years and at one time or another have bought fish all over the place. At one point I had what I thought was a great relationship with one store (won't name it) and this was before the time when I just froze fish so I was there 2 or sometimes 3 times a week. Yeah I was still doing what my mother did..only buying fish on the day you were planning to eat it. The fish was fine and I was treated well. One day I pointed to some Blue Fish and the guy leans over and says.."Not for You, today" (add whatever accent sounds right to your there).

Ech... What he was saying was he would sell THAT fish to someone else but not a steady customer. Lesson I learned was look to buy fish from some place where there is heavy volume, quick turn over and don't rely on the shop owners skewed ethics because you think you have some personal relationship going .

Anything you get at the green market is fresh out of local waters. They sell out every time, so there's no issue with old inventory.
  • Carnivore.. Yes, toally agree with Green market as being an excellent source for fresh, high quality fish.
  • Actually, I hear the fish distributor on Douglass (I forget the name) between 3rd and 4th will sell to consumers if they come early in the morning. I haven't been there but I hear it's good stuff. Can anyone expand on what I'm talking about?
