Gorgeous male cat needs home — Brooklynian

Gorgeous male cat needs home

My neighbor moved to Florida 2 weeks ago and left his cat behind. He's a beautiful black cat named Chatzee, about a year old, neutered and fully vetted. He gets along well with other cats, dogs, and kids. I brought him up to my place last weekend and he's a total sweetheart.

P.S. No adoption fee since he was already vetted, maybe a small donation would be a good idea?

  • He's beautiful! Look at those eyes! And he's got a great nose!
And it looks like he put on a little white tie to dress up...
I hope he finds a home soon.
  • Your neighbor moved and just left him? Unbelievable.
What a lucky kitty to have you as a neighbor as well as so many others who just pay attention to the animals and take responsibility.
    That's really nice.
  • What kills me is that the vet clinic he adopted him from would have taken Chatzee back and found him a new home! Every time someone does something shitty like that I get all pissed off but then I come here and remember that there are still wonderful people like you guys. Chatzee is a real sweetheart and will make someone very happy.

I called the clinic (Noah's Ark) and told them I don't mind fostering Chatzee until he finds a new home. I'm going to email the vet there pics of him and leozoeypiper was kind enough to post him on petfinder. Keep your fingers crossed that he finds his person!
  • this cat is so awesome looking! he looks like my orson's older, slightly cooler cousin. i can't believe anyone would leave this cat. especially to go to florida -- how great would this cat look on a lanai, in maybe a hawaiian shirt and dark glasses....

incidentally, if you haven't seen the name spelled out, it might be "schatzie", which is roughly "sweetie" in german and yiddish. forgive me if it really is chatzie. :)
  • I know it's a male cat, but he reminds me of Eartha Kitt, especially that first pic with the claws. "Rrrraaarrr, I am cat woman"

 I know, I totally insane.
  • It's spelled Chatzee on his vet records but I wouldn't be surprised if they just didn't know the right way to spell it. He is a total sweetie, he was sleeping in my laundry basket when I woke up this morning.

Mama, he loves to lay down with his paws stretched out like that. When you go to pet him he does that thing with his claws, I swear he's telling me, "I am so fierce!"
  • Haha! Yeah, I wish I could take him home, he's so beautiful!
    Here's a pic, very fierce

  • it occurred to me later that chatzee is a funny pun on schatzie and chat, as in french for "cat". so nevermind and sorry to be a know-it-all. :)

    he's SO gorgeous.
  • Sweetie, I didn't even think of that! That's pretty damn clever, you keep right on being so smart. You're no know-it-all!
  • I demand more black kitty pics :bounce:

either that or more mumps and grumps

A girl's gotta get her fix of kitty cuteness :P
  • I wish I could take more pics but I still have no camera. Flexichick was so amazing to lend me hers so I have some updated pics of the babies. Oh, and Mr. Mumples got fixed today, my poor baby!

Chatzee is adorable as ever, he sleeps on his back on my bed looking so cute. It's even cuter since he has no fur around his nipples!
  • One day I'll buy a new camera, and I'll know just what to do with my old one :-)
  • He really is adorable. He reminds me of my guys when they were young.
  • Chatzee narrowly escaped being given to an unsavory woman. Let me explain. J is the neighbor who owned Chatzee and left him behind. T and E are friends of J and my next door neighbors. When J moved he left Chatzee in E and T's "care". They couldn't have him in their apartment for personal reasons so they left him in J's empty apartment for 2 weeks. During this time they fed him but spent very little time with him. A window was also left open and Chatzee jumped out of the window and spent the night in the backyard. (Fortunately J's apartment is on the 2nd floor so he wasn't hurt.) It was after this that I brought him up to my place.

My original plan was to bring Chatzee back to the vet clinic J adopted him from. The vet is Noah's Ark in Bed-Stuy and they were more than happy to take him back and find him a new home. E and T were fine with that and T even wrote the clinic a letter explaining why they couldn't keep him. It was a few days before I could get him over there and by then he was settling in nicely. So I called the clinic and suggested I foster him for them and we all try to find him a new home. A little over a week ago T told me she had a friend interested in adopting Chatzee. I told her that was fine but that I wanted to meet her first to check her out. Well, the other night T knocks on my door to tell me that her friend M is here to pick up the cat! I go next door to meet M, who turns out to be very defensive when I ask her anything. I told her I'd been fostering for over a year and I liked to make sure the cats go to a good home. She tells me, "Oh, he's going to a good home!" Like I'm just going to take her word for it.

Against my better judgement and because T vouched for her, I reluctantly agree. Turns out M doesn't even have a carrier so she wants me to give her one. The only carriers I have readily available are soft ones for my own cats. I dig a plastic carrier out but it's missing the door so I go hunting for it. Meanwhile M and her gentleman friend are waiting in the hallway telling T that they are in a rush and have to go. I call T into my place and tell her I'm not comfortable with the situation. That I don't know anything about this woman, where she lives, who lives with her, whether she's had pets in the past, etc... Oh, I almost forgot! She didn't know anything about Chatzee, how big he is, whether he'd been fixed or had all his shots.

T gets upset with me because "I'm making her look bad in front of her friends", when she was the one who put me on the spot. T opens my door to tell them I'm not giving them the cat, Mumps and Grumps run out in the hallway. Grumps runs into E and T's apartment but I don't see where Mumps goes. I go next door to get Grumps, put him in my apartment and ask T and her friends whether Mumps went downstairs. T tells me no and her friends say nothing, I ask them 2 more times because I know that Mumps likes to run downstairs. As I head down to get Mumps M says in a really snotty voice, "Oh, she's going to get another cat!" I go down and grab Mumps (who was by the front door) and hear M and her friend coming down the stairs. M says to her friend, "It's not like it's a fucking child!" As I pass them I tell them, "I asked you 3 times whether or not the kitten ran downstairs and you couldn't answer me. You think I'm going to trust you with a cat?" Keep in mind that Mumps is white and black, not very stealthy, and had to run past M and her friend to get to the stairs.

So, that's my little drama. T and I have made up a bit and are friendly again. E and T are not bad people, they've been really sweet to me since I moved here and T even cooks for me sometimes. But T doesn't think of pets the same way I do, pets are just pets to her. For me, pets are family. Well, if you've read this far let me thank you! Chatzee is doing so well, he plays with Squeaks and they even sleep together. He likes to lay on his back on my bed, with his big belly and boy nipples showing. I swear, sometimes I can almost hear him thinking, "I am soooo fabulous!"
  • Subject: cat

It's that instinct that really comes into play with people. Isn't it?
Just the fact that they couldn't care less whether or not Mumps ran past and could get out into the street was enough for you to justify your gut instinct.
    Once again.........great job Caseopele.
  • Good for you for trusting your instincts. I'm sure Chatzee will find a better home with somebody who will take good care of him
  • I forgot to add that after my last comment to M she said something like, "That's your fucking cat, he's not my responsibility." Which really made me want to give her Chatzee even more!

People have asked me before how I know who to adopt cats to, how I know which homes are good ones. Part of it is just talking to people and observing how they interact with the fosters and my cats. But a big part is instinct, you just get a feeling about someone. Thanks for putting up with my long winded story and thanks for being so great, dakota and flexi!

Oh, and Chatzee would totally be a drag queen if he was human. Even his name is perfect but you have to say it all Broadway style. Jazz hands!
