Any public school teachers here? — Brooklynian

Any public school teachers here?

tk was me!
edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
Hello. I am doing a research about NY State regulation for teachers/schools.

I was told that NY State encourage teachers to tell kids to use pens not pencils during class.

I have been calling Dep. of Education office all day but haven't got a luck to talk to a real person yet!

If any of you know anything about this regulation, can you tell me in more detail?

I would appreciate it very very much.

  • Im not a teacher - but my son is in the 4th grade at PS 9 and he is still using a pencil. We were not given pens to purchase on their supply list. If you still need to talk to a teacher I can put you in touch with a few at PS 9.

    Good luck
  • yes, i would LOVE to speak to the teachers..
should i pm my phone number?
  • Subject: pencils vs. pens

I am a NYC 5th grade teacher and have never heard about teachers being told to tell kids to use pens. I have my 5th graders use pencil only unless they are correcting or editing something they wrote. I am pretty sure all the teachers at my school have kids always use pencils. Where did you hear this info?
  • Do they have different regulations at Elementary to High schools?

We heard from one teacher at this public school in Harlem today.
  • on regents exams the students must use pen! sometimes teachers try to enforce this earlier- as in class - so that there is no confusion on the exams. i would always try to get my students to use pencil but they said that was "cheap".

    who knows!
  • I teach 9th and 12th grades at a public Crown Heights high school; and most of the time my students have neither a pen nor a pencil. If I do lend them anything it's usually a pencil from the BOE (not because of department policy, but because it's there and free.) However, I prefer pens because it helps to prepare them for the standardized tests.
