Yeah but these cocktails are really something. This is not an every day place but a special treat once in a while. Its kind of like Campbell Apartment in the city or something. I watched them fresh squeeze juice by hand for the cocktails and stuff. It takes them like 10 minutes to artfully craft your drink.
Check it out at least once or if you have a client to impress thats the place. Its also black owned a big plus.

Shouldn't we just be hoping for responsible and conscientious owners in the neighborhhod who provide a quality product at a reasonable price regardless of their skin color?

    Just asking.
  • Given the historical legacy of non-black-owned businesses in black neighborhoods, plus the positive effect that small business ownership has on a community or ethnic group, I see no problem with Guest mentioning it in passing.

It's not like s/he said, "go here! the owner is black!". S/he was just mentioning something positive, IMHO.

Thank you. Thats all I was saying that it was an added bonus on top of the rest of the review. Bless.
  • I do agree... It's nice to maintain some Black ownership in the neighborhood. Not hating on anybody else but I want to see Black people maintain and economic stake in the area rather than cashing out and moving to a place with a lower cost of living. Ideally we can maintain the residential, ethnic and economic diversity that makes this neighborhood special. We don't want to be Park Slope (at least I really don't want it to be Park Slope).

Of course any business needs to be well run regardless of the ethnicity of the owners. I don't care if my uncle owns the spot. If the service or product offering is horrible I won't support them.

I think the Hideout is differentiated vs. other bars and given the size of the place they have to maintain a very high profit margin to pay their bills. They aren't selling 300 beers a night like Moe's.

I added a few honorable mentions to the blog today...
  • I must disagree with you on your last hm entry. The scariest bar in Brooklyn or any of the boroughs or maybe anywhere is KB's 140 club on Lawrence Street.
  • Carlton--very cool blog thanks. I live in Clinton Hill and mostly agree with your bar choices. Must get down to the Navy Yard joint some time. One question: Where is the Hideout?
  • I'll have to check out KB's 140 in person but a bar with a website this slick can't be nearly as formidible as the Navy Yard. I guarantee they don't have a website, catering or much else beyond go-go dancers, drinks and security cameras but you've definitely piqued my interest. I'll mention it in the blog when I have a chance to visit.

The Hideout is on Adelphi & Dekalb across from Chez Oskar.

    .
    LMFBAO!!!!!
I would have never imagined they would have a website :D
Don't let that fool you in any way. You must see it for yourself. It is a place NOT TO GO but go anyway. It will be the worst night of your life and you will come back and curse me
  • The KB140 is probably the second worst bar I've ever been in. The first would be the Rail Bird in Hicksville Long Island.

Here is a review of an apartment that is directly upstairs from the KB140:

OMG I think that is the funniest thing I have ever seen in my life!!!

    *DEAD*

    :lol::lol::lol:
  • That apartment listing ranks up there with the recent Philly guy looking for HO scale train enthusiasts.
  • I'm gonna try to go this weekend. This place sounds like an experience. I like to revisit Brooklyn circa 1977 via local watering holes. Hopefully I can take some pictures but it sounds too shady to pull out camera. I'll lose any sliver of authenticity I bring in with me. Definitely don't take any pictures at the Navy Yard Lounge.
  • So did you make it to the KB140?
  • Not yet... I'll definitely add a post on it when I do. It will probably be next week.
  • I've been to KB140 and I don't understand how the bad rep is warranted. All I saw was a group of people eating, drinking, and having fun with the karoake machine. Granted, it wasn't the most interesting place, but hardly as bad as described.
