    wait. is that ok?
  • Remember Green Paradise that was on Vanderbilt a few years ago? Not enough people into the raw thing then. I tried it, I prefer my food cooked! Good luck to these guys, wonder if it's the same people...
  • My guess is that it won't open for at least six months and will close 3-6 months thereafter. There is no market for this type of food around here.
  • Raw food is a joke unless you have been living in the middle of the jungle of Papua New Guinea but even there the savages cook their food, have you not been watching living with the Kombai? Raw food is a new age bunch of crap for people who have eating disorders and are obsessed with yoga!! Not going to make it!
  • Wasn't this fad over by 2002?
  • What's the name of the joint?
  • i think "rawstar"...but i might be remembering incorrectly.

We just finished eating our meal from RAWSTAR. I ordered the garlic stuffed mushroom with Asian boktoy and "tree salad". My husband ordered the spinach pie with curry plantains on the side. HOLY MOLY that was the best meal we've had in a long time. We'll be back super soon to try more items on the menu. Also, I must say the prices are very moderate, especially compared to raw food restaurants in the city. I highly recommend this place!!!

  • It will be Grand Opening.....Grand Closing.
  • i haven't eaten there, but i must say it does look pretty cute inside. nice to see something open there, instead of just the WAMA awning bleaching in the sun.
  • I'm a little girl with a huge appetite, and normally I like hot, heavy, rich food (pizza, mac n cheese, tempura, etc) but with this weather, the idea of that kind of food makes me queasy. So maybe raw food isn't such a bad idea right now. Maybe others will feel the same. I'd give it a try.

I wish them luck. I wish any new business in the neighborhood luck. Even the ones that don't necessarily serve my needs, I hope that others benefit from their services or products and that the owners are happy here.

I'm guessing "raw food" also means vegan ...

don't quote me on that, though. I'm no authority.

  • I've actually been looking into raw food quite a bit lately (not as a 100 percent thing, but more as a majority of what I eat over the day). I'm VERY excited this place is opening as I've been incredibly surprised by feeling as healthy, good and satisfied as I do after two weeks of modifying my diet (and this comes from someone who has NEVER stuck to a "diet," ever).

All that said, I'll answer a couple of questions as I understand the answers:

    1) Raw does not NECESSARILY mean vegan, though many who are hardcore raw foodists are also vegan. If you eat raw, you can (theoretically) still eat raw milk cheese, raw milk anything, beef and fish from quality sources, raw eggs (think Caesar salad and the like), etc. For those who care, I am not keeping to vegan.

    2) Everyone has their own interpretation of eating raw and the exceptions they will make. In my case, so far I'm keeping to a "raw until dinner" idea, but also try to incorporate some raw fruit/veg into what I have at night. I also don't mind incorporating some sprouted breads and small amounts of cooked whole grains. In fact, we just ordered sushi for tonight's meal. So there!

I'm happy to talk to anyone about my experience so far. I've been shocked and surprised at how happy I am with this lifestyle.

  • oh man. if oysters and raw milk cheese are part of a lifestyle, I'm in.

    My thoughts exactly! :)

I was a vegetarian for 10 years and a vegan for two. As much respect as I have for those who thrive on those diets, they don't work for me. I don't need much animal protein, but a bit here and there (especially fish) make my body good.

Oh, and to further clarify something said above: The threshhold for heating food for most raw foodists is 118 degrees F, so most don't heat above 115 degrees to be on the safe side. The rationale behind this is that most enzymes are destroyed at 118 degrees. The more you know!

Hey Brooklynred- not to poke holes through your story, but on the one hand you say that you could never stick to a "diet" per se, but then go on to admit that you've been vegetarian (not easy) and vegan (very not easy) for a decade. Seems to me that these "diets" haven't been that hard for you at all. Now, I have a very weak barrier when it comes to abstinence of anything that I love (see my thread in the lounge about being veg for 3 months).
Thanks though, for all the great raw info.
