FIGHT FIGHT: PSP, Crotches, pervs and the Public Library
Where is NY Magazine when you want them? There is a good fight going on at Park Slope parents about porn, the library and the word pervert. This could go down in the blue hat hall of fame (as far as the pervert angle of the debate goes). I can't post anything too specific because it would be against the PSP code but for those who aren't parents: here are the highlights.
A parent was in the public library and was surprised to see two adult men looking at images of porn on a computer monitor out in the open where his/her kids could see them.
This began the firestorm:
Those who defend porn but think there needs to be limits to open porn viewing at a public library
Those who fear any tampering with library porn is the end of democracy and "next someone will strip the shelves of Lolita and Huck Finn".
Those who want privacy screens installed (a.k.a peep show booths)
Those who are so outraged that porn could be tampered with that they are renewing their memberships to the ACLU today.--thank you all for reminding me I'm overdue to renew my ACLU membership.
Those who are very upset by the degrading word "pervert". Perverts pay taxes too. I'm kind of surprised to read such a judgemental and divisive label thrown out there.
This is definitely going to end up somewhere

Was the pervert wearing a boy's hat?

How do you _know_ it was a boy's hat?
Obligatory. -
Oh, boy. I was waiting for this. Having not even read the 8000-word long diatribes on free speech, porn, library, etc., etc., the very heartfelt offense taken by the word perv was waay too much. But, I knew this would be a typical PSP "aren't they a scary bunch" launching pad.
As for this string of "let me talk so I can hear myself" posts on PSP, the stereotype is deserved in this case. It's a shame such a great n'hood resource heads down the inevitable path of super-self-seriousness enough to make it noticeable. -
I'm pretty sure it was a brown hat, you jack asses.

this was just on NBC news at 11. They also had the woman who runs PSP.
Btw, speaking of NBC, did anybody see Sue Simmons' "What the FUCK are you doing?" blooper from yesterday? Hilarious -

[sarcasm]Yeah, it's so annoying when people try to stand up for the rights guaranteed to us by the Constitution...[/sarcasm] -
Why the hell do people have to go and ruin everything? Most of the rules we have to endure that seem to make little sense are because of stupid and selfish a-holes like the one at the library looking at porn. If people would use common sense then we would not have so many ridiculous rules. Looking at porn in the library in plain sight - really? What kind of special tool are you?
-
I want to know what Chuck Scarborough was doing!
Also, in case you didn't see the link on Gowanus Lounge or the BPL site, they posted a reply and detailed explanation of guidelines and rights.

You -excuse the expression- beat me to it. Why would anyone use a public computer in an open public place to look at porn? Morality aside, the possibility of a child seeing it makes it impolite. Whatever happened to civility? Sheesh. -
I'm all for free speech and unfettered internet access at the library, but...
Goddamn it. I'm on a budget and I use those computers with my kids frequently on the weekends for school projects and such. I really don't want to be threading through the neighbors viewing of hardcore porn with my little ones on the way to the printer. Could we have an "adult" row in the back or a wack off room or whatever?
I can't believe I'm (almost) on the PSP side of the issue. The world must be ending. Next thing y'all are going to tell me that alternate side parking is suspended for summer. The end of the world, I tell you!
And, getting back to the hat, who the fuck cares if it was a brown hat? Why the fuck are you bringing color into it? Isn't the rampant sexism enough for you people?!?! Sheesh. -
Before everyone condemns the guy, I think a little more info is in order. Was he sitting for a while actually browsing porn, or did he click a link someone sent him and get goatse'd or something?

I think there is a special place in hell for those that use the word goatse as a verb.
Unless it involves Obama goatse.
Because that is probably OK.
Or not.
And I'm removing my comments from the actual incident, just making a comment on internet porn at the library in general. Which honestly has been coming up in the US ever since there WAS internet at the library. I remember a big flap about this back in AZ five years back.
Anyway. -

Don't make me Rick Roll you...
Actually, that's probably more offensive than getting goatse'd!

I believe the PSP posters are wearing asshats. -
It doesn't matter what guy it was. The debate is about the fact that ANYONE can view porn at the library. That is your constitutional right. And park slopers want you to be nice and comfy while you watch that gang bang. You need your own separate room, perhaps a foot rub, and a nice view of all the real Lolitas walking around before you! Ain't that grand.

So is your position that they SHOULDN'T be able to view those gang bangs at all at the library, or that it is cool for them to view those gang bangs in front of children?
'Cause I'm unclear still.
And although I live in Crown Heights, sign me up for the foot rub! But not the gang bang! I'll leave that to others. -

I see an opportunity arising here when Toys In Babeland opens in the Slope...maybe combination yoga, vegan, wellness porn-viewing parties? -
I've worked in the library world for quite some time, in various capacities. This is a never-dying issue. Unfortunately, there is a sort of person who gets quite excited by violating what most of us think of as manners. That's a turn-on for these individuals akin to exhibitionism. There's the same sort of behavior at internet cafes (here and all over the world).
And short of instituting filters - which public libraries can only do in children's rooms - there's not a whole lot to be done except put up cube-like spaces that give a touch of privacy, and then eject those who are publicly masturbating, which is a misdemeanor.
There are always jerks. There will always be jerks. And you can't legislate against jerky behavior. You can only legislate against the jerking-off. -
The important question I have for the library staff:
Just for future reference--does anyone clean the keyboards and mouses regularly?
Mmmm...sticky. :? -

Defending the rights of the scum of the earth means that you also defend the rights of the angels at the same time. You can't pick and choose who deserves Constitutional rights and who doesn't.
As to the issue at hand: Argh. It's a dicey one, and one I never know how to think on; because on the one hand, First Amenedment rights is a soapbox for me, but on the other, so is public and civic responsibility. I do think that "adult" material should be AVAILABLE at a library, but I also think that a library should put SOME restrictions on it (make things like DELTA OF VENUS or 120 DAYS OF SODOM restricted, so either you have to go into a back room or be carded to check them out or read them; I'm 38, and my license says so, so my rights are still protected, and they're not lying out on the counter, so the kidlets aren't exposed; everyone wins).
Computer access is a weird bugaboo that I don't see a solution too -- because, no, I DON'T think that it should be possible for people to be looking at YouPorn out in public in mixed company. But on the other hand, the only kind of software that would be able to block that is extremely cumbersome, and tends to block things based on key words, so people also would be banned from researching breast cancer.
but, then again, the bigger problem I have with the library these days is the fact that their collection of knitting books is about 3 years behind. :? -
Mrs. Sterling 2000 frequents the PSP list, and apparently now some of the anti-porn folks are being email carpet-bombed with offensive personal email messages...the saga continues...

That was priceless. Also, reading the PSP posts, I got the impression that some of the posters are thinking that "porn" just means pictures of naked ladies with big boobs. Not sure they realize that porn has perhaps changed a bit since the days when they were sneaking peaks at dad's Playboy. They also think that some of the people looking a porn at the library are doing academic research.
Howdy, Stranger!
