Fostering pets

My boyfriend and I have been considering fostering dogs (well, one at a time!) since I work from home most of the time and have been wanting a pet despite the fact that we both travel periodically. It seems like the perfect alternative- keep the animal for a few weeks and help the organization/dog without the commitment of a lifetime relationship. Has anyone fostered dogs or cats? Who did you work with? How was the experience?

Before anyone jumps down my throat- I am aware that some of the dogs may have behavior issues (I've always owned shelter dogs which I adopted as adults so I know how they can be a bit "problematic") and we're willing to work with that, especially since I'm home so much.
