ripped off on paint at Bruno's

Subject: ripped off on paint at Bruno's

I have always been a fan of Bruno's hardware store on Court Street and Livingston. Much better service than at Home Depot or Lowe's, and they have everything. However, I have to let people know that they totally ripped me off on paint last weekend. The guy with braids in the back mixed me a gallon of paint in the wrong color (even though I had given him the paint chip with number etc.) I should have checked the paint before I brought it home.

Even worse, he told me that a gallon of paint would only cover 100 square feet, though I had read elsewhere that it should cover 200 sq feet. Lo and behold I wound up with 2 full gallons of unopened paint and had to buy a gallon of the color I actually wanted. I went back yesterday and tried to return the unopened cans but they wouldn't take it back since it was custom-mixed, even though it was due to their staff's ineptitude. That was $100 down the drain!! I am so pissed.

  • Tell the manager that you will take him/her to small claims court if they don't rectify this. I had a similar situation where I was sold the wrong glue for a parquet floor and I'm a contractor. I took them to court and won. It's cheaper for them to refund you.
  • They should have replaced the paint that they mixed incorrectly. No store takes back custom mixed colors. They are "custom".

As for the contractor, your post doesn't make it clear whether you took Bruno to court or some place else. My feeling is that you are the contractor, you bid on a job as a professional, and as a professional you should know what type of glue to use.
  • Not necessarily true. As a construction professional, I place orders with supply houses constantly. If I order one thing and they send another - that's their fault and they have to fix it.

Jane, talk to a manager. This is their screw up. Home Depot might be the devil in a big box, but when they mix you a color, they show it to you and swipe a sample on the lid.
