Any suggestions?

And by fun i don't mean Chuckie Cheese I just mean unique and it could be casual or pricey and we like all types of food.

  • Why don't you name some places in the area (or not) that you like... I have too many on my list of places I love.

Just to start, have you tried Ghenet on 4th? It just opened last month and we went once a few weeks ago. It is REALLY good and I would call it unique (but then again, it was the first time I've had Ethiopian).
  • Zenkichi in williamsburg. Not cheap but great food and a really fun experience.
  • Well, it is no Chuckie Cheese, but Mars 2112 is interesting. You have to take a spaceship to get there, and then there are aliens wandering about. The food is so-so at best though.

Lederhosen in the West Village just off the #1 train at Christopher Street is pretty good and not ungodly expensive. Nothing amazing, but the same excellent quality German food at half the price (or less) of comparable spots.
  • S'Mac Mac and Cheese on E. 12th Street in Manhattan

  • i second ghenet on 4th.

Most of my eating is done locally but here are some faves
Red Rose on Smith St and Sam's on Court for Italian food
Arirang on 86th Street is fun because they do the little food show for you (my 12 year old loves it there)
my favorite place of all is Peter Lugers because I am a steak lover and I have never ever had a bad meal there.
Mars 2012 as daver said is fun.
Cowgirl Cafe (for casual southern comfort food and margaritas in jelly jars)
Jeckyl & Hyde (the one in the Village - for unusual atmosphere)
Ninja (Japanese food in an unusual atmosphere)
Some of my favorites are (because of the fix price or food)
Cucieria (I have butchered this name) Plata Forma (an nice all you can eat place)
I used to like Cite because they had a fix price meal that included appetizer, entre and dessert with a different wine to compliment each one but they lost their lease. I was told that Maloney & Porcelli are now doing the same thing as Cite.
I went with a group of Brooklynians to a great Korean BBQ place which was pretty fun and interesting (maybe Carnivoire can add the name of the place here)

I think that place had one of the worst NYT reviews I've ever seen! No stars, not a "satisfactory" no, they actually gave it a "poor." That's the only time I've ever seen that. The review is actually one of the funniest I've read.

    Kum Gang San
The food is good, but it's hard to beat a piano on top of a waterfall for kitsch value.
  • if you like japanese food, I highly recommend sakagura (it's on 43rd in the basement of an office building - get a reservation) or menchanko-tei (I prefer the 55th st location). I've been going to both places for years and love them equally ... yet separately.
  • What a fun question...

I second Sakagura! The space and food are equally gorgeous and it has the added bonus of being hidden in the basement of an office/apartment building—you feel like you’re sneaking into some sort of hideout.

Robin des Bois in Carroll Gardens (Cobble Hill?) is pretty awesome—it’s not *exactly* kitschy, but is a bit like eating in Hugh Hefner’s attic, if Hugh Hefner were French and a hoarder. The steak is great, as is the half chicken. And they have a garden!

ODaisho on St. Mark’s place has Japanese pub (izakaya) food and is pretty authentic (in this case, that means loud and hectic and friendly), and yummy. Get a frosty mug of Kirin for me and do not miss the kimchi pork (buta-kimu), or the grilled-bacon-wrapped-asparagus-on-a-stick. Actually, do not miss any of the foods on a stick!

Wanjo (Wonjo?) in K-town will let you grill at your table and also makes lots of lovely spicy dishes.

    Happy eating!
  • I have to be drunk to find the food at Jekyll and Hyde the slightest bit tasty but it is something of an experience.

i am glad to hear that Ghenet is open in brooklyn! i love ethiopian food !

Has anyone been to Lucky Chengs? That's supposed to be an experience but an experience with good food would be the best case scenario!
  • Lucky Chengs is awfulawfulawful. do not eat there (or Mars 2112 or J&H either, for that matter.)

Peking Duck House in Manhattan's C'town is awesome. And, the restaurant that Angel's Share is in in the EV sounds similar to the pub Fruitbat's describing--yummy and cheap, with lots of bits on sticks. I will vouch for Ghenet as well, but have only eaten in the Man. one.

And of course, the all time favorite, Dim Sum.
  • Anyone know of good yakitori/izakaya food in brooklyn?
  • I like TacuTacu/Rice Republic in Williamsburg . They have good food and drinks reasonably priced and downstairs they have music and karaoke. They are on N 6th tween Bedford and Berry. Also if you dont mind traveling to the city...Sofritosnyc.Great food, drinks, atmosphere and music. They also have live music on some nights. They are on E 57th st tween 1st and york. Check out their website.
  • I agree - Lucky Chengs is fun but I have never been so sick as I was after eating there in October (so was everyone else I was with that night) It wasn't even food poisoning, it was some creepy flu/parasite thing that made me think I was moments from death. My mother LOVED Ellen's Stardust when she was here. If you're looking to thrill out of towners, forget the River Cafe, apparently Ellen's is the place to go.
