safe? — Brooklynian

safe?

Hi all!

I'm new to the neighborhood. I moved here to have lower rent, and I live with three other 20-something women--two of whom are grad students. I'm on Bergen and Franklin. When I came to see the apartment in daylight, it was fine, but I should have checked it out at night. I feel a little unsafe by myself now. Will I be OK? Is there anything I should know?

Also, where to do laundry! I really want a delivery service, but everyone's descriptions of Bubbleworks have scared me off!

Thanks all!
Kristin

  • Meh- it's ok, that area. Just, you know, watch your back.

Anything you should know: when you get off the subway/bus TAKE OFF YOUR IPOD.

    Welcome to the nabe!

    :D

call joe's for delivery service (just search the board). they're pretty good.
  • Thanks for the welcome! I guess I'll feel safer when I start to meet more people in the neighborhood. I must say that walking home alone at 11 last night was...-wipes brow-

Time to toughen up! And I shall tell my roomies no iPods at night!
  • Welcome to Crown Heights Kristin!

I've been in the neighborhood for nearly a year now at Bergen and New York and have never felt seriously threatened. Granted, I'm a guy so things might be a bit different for me, but I wouldn't be too worried, just be mindful of your surroundings as always. I tend to come back to my apartment very late (around 12-1am) and often see police patrolling the neighborhoods as well.

The neighborhood is great though. Most of the people are very nice, a few bars and restaurants are starting to pop up on Franklin, and Eastern Parkway is a beautiful street to walk down. Not too mention the proximity to the museum, library, park, and park slope if you're looking for more stuff to do.
  • Thanks Dapearl9!

I want to meet more people in the nabe! I think that will help a lot. Where does everyone go? Franklin Park? That's the new beer garden I think.

Yes, and I smell a bar crawl in the not so distant future...or maybe just a FP par-tay.
  • I'm there! Just say the time and place.
  • Hey! I just moved to that exact block (Bergen btw Franklin and Classon) for the same reasons back in March, and yeah, it's totally desolate at night. I spent the first month or so just about frightened out of my wits when I was out past 10:30 pm. I'm starting to relax as I learn to identify real threats (limited) and distinguish them from stuff in my head (most stuff), but it can be a little challenging.

The neighborhood is changing a lot, and in situations like that, the border areas tend to be the most in flux. I think, as new buildings go up and new businesses come in, my comfort level will rise. I hope that that happens for you, as well. Apparently, according to some of the longtime residents I've been talking to, even in the last couple of years or so the area has gone from a place where you didn't really want to be out on the streets after 9, to a place where people can "just walk around". They usually say this last part with an incredulous expression.

Good luck in your new place!

Not too focus too much on the negatives, but watch out for cell phone use too...most people who run into trouble seem to either be talking on a cell phone (distracted, easy target) or fiddling with an ipod (or an iphone...best of both worlds!).

    And welcome!

    And not just at night...

While there are some crimes that are hellbent and cannot be averted, I'm convinced that the majority of the stuff I've seen happen here over the last year or so I've lived here can be averted by simply being cognizant of one's surroundings and alert.
  • You will be just fine, but do keep in mind there is a mens shelter in that area. Barcrawl sounds good.
  • I also live on Bergen between Classon and Grand... and I like the area...
the B65 and B45 are a godsend on some mornings... its a 5-6 (new york brisk walk) to the train.

Appollonia666 and I live in the same building on the block and love it...
The neighborhood is evolving on both sides of the block... with lots and lots of construction-- I swear in a year or so its going to be a totally different place.

There are a few mechanics places left on the block... and the guys will say good morning/ evening to you... and i acutally found that they are pretty nice etc.

There's an artist loft in the old Heinz building that has a few good parties there a month... There's Grand Space that also has events etc from yoga to movie screenigs to parties on Bergen and Grand...

Most people on the block seem friendly enough, you start to recognize familar faces... and look out for the guy with one eye patch... he's really cool and gives out free incense, that he makes himself. Again a good neighbor to at least know in passing as he's been her for awhile and would look out for you.

If you ever want to do brunch or something as a welcome to the block send me a PM...

I am intrigued by this Heinz building and aforementioned party- can you please expand on this some more???
  • yeah I live near there.

The walk from the C on fulton towards Eastern Parkway is particularly desolate and scary looking but it's fine. Just keep our wits about you.

I'd love to have some trees and street lights plated along the way to make the path less ugly.
  • No problem Kristin.

I'd love to do a bar crawl too. Even though I've been in the area nearly a year I still don't know too many people there which is a shame. I'm this summer will change that a bit though.
  • Kryslite see you at Franklin Park tomorrow?? I hope so!
