Half Being Sold?
Just saw this on Chowhound: http://www.chowhound.com/boards/outer/messages/73023.html
Does anyone know what the proverbial "dealio" is?

Huh. The tip comes from DeeDee, who is usually pretty reliable about these things.
-
not surprised. the owners have dropped veiled hints to various people I know about being interested in someone buying them out. I heard there's interest in building a true cocktail bar in the neighborhood (like a Milk & Honey, though less speakeasy), but I think Half is too big of a space for that.
-
hmm, well that's a shame. seems like it could have had a lot of potential.
-
they are selling the business, as is, not closing. at least that's where the dealio stands now. asking a pretty penny too!

how much?
and yeah, not closing, but you can bet whoever buys it is going to make substantial changes to the business model currently employed. if I were buying it, I'd get rid of the shop and reconfigure the space, get rid of most of the food items, seriously analyze daytime business, and get a full liquor license. maybe cut a deal w/ albano to allow half customers to order pizza and let albano hold a wine menu from half for his customers. -
I heard that the previous owners are going to take over the space and call it the Krispy Kreme Red Bliss House of Doom (free wifi).
Seriously, if it's going to stay a bar, I also say ditch the food and focus strongly on beer and spirits, not unlike d.b.a. in the E. Village. -
It's good to have a few food options, though...I hate bars that have nothing for me to munch on.
-
Yeah, I hear where you're coming from. Although I never would have said it when they first opened, for example, I think that the bar at Soda brings people in, and the food keeps them there. They do a great job with simple pub fare.
But maybe I'm just agreeing with you because your avatar frightens me. What the hell is that? And please don't tell me it lives in my closet.bluedove wrote: It's good to have a few food options, though...I hate bars that have nothing for me to munch on.

that's why I said most of the food items. I just think they're totally overextended food-wise having tons of expensive cheese, meat and produce sitting around. I know for a fact they have to toss a lot of that stuff because it doesn't get used. and the truth is any establishment is going to make way more money on booze than food, so pouring a lot of energy into food is a bad choice, especially if your business is on the rocks.
but I do agree with you -- I like bars that have more than a bowl of nuts as a food option. I think partnering up with local restaurants, though, would be one way to deal with that -- there are 4 restaurants on that block, and aliseo, at least, serves a lot of the same types of foods half serves (cheese platters, salads, etc). or just streamline the menu. drop the sandwiches, have two kinds of cheese plates, and have chips & salsa or something. it's not like they have a huge kitchen to work with. -

It's a doll from a mask shop in Mexico. And another mask behind it. You should see some of the ones I didn't choose to use... -
the avatar shouldn't be frightening, its a day of the dead figurine isn't it?
i <3 day of the dead!
and i would <3 a milk and honey type speakeasy in the heights! -

it would be hot, right? but I can't imagine people coughing up between $10-13 for a drink here. I'd do it if it were the same quality as M&H but otherwise, no way! I actually discussed this with some investors and we all agreed the prices would have to be lower but still, the prices would be on par with the 'nice' glasses of wine at Half. per drink, and probably very few buybacks. it's something I'd love, but not sure is feasible. I mean, does the Slope have a decent true cocktail bar? -

A couple that try to be.
Although Loki's is by no definition a cocktail bar, one of the bartenders, Matt Kimmet, is an excellent maker of cocktails. -
Ahh, dia de los muertos. Makes sense... I mean "hace sentido."

yeah, I want a real one. it's one of the few things I still have to depend on Manhattan for. quite frankly, I'm really trying to spend less time in the big M. I laughed, though, when I saw soda advertising a moscow mule. um. M&H makes them with fresh ginger juice. nothing can top that. -

Do you like the cocktails at Angel's Share? That place is my absolute fave; I've been going there since they first opened. Now if they only had an outpost in Brooklyn... -

the quality at angel's share doesn't measure up to milk & honey at all. I've compared several cocktails at both (I wanted to give them each a fair shot) and found that milk & honey beats angel's share on every single one. moscow mule, for sure -- angel's share uses commercially produced ginger beer, m&h makes their own ginger juice. for decent cocktails without a reservation (required at m&h), I prefer flatiron lounge or brandy library to angel's share. -
I really like M&H. A friend of a friend owns it, but I can't think of a bar that would fit in the nabe less than a place like that. I'd rather see another bank somewhere on Washington/Vanderbilt than another bar for sure. I can get a drink wherever but it'd be nice to get some money after sundown!

I heard that the asking price is $300,000 for the business. someone jokingly said "I'd like to go in there and offer them half."

I realize I posted this update, but does anyone have any more info about the status or not of the sale?
