Getting pets to Manhattan ?!?!

My husband and I have been looking forward to the AIDS walk in CP tomorrow, and planned to take our two dogs with us. Now as the big day approaches, I started looking up pet taxis to get us into the city from Crown Heights. Okay, I expected a $50 hit- crazy but worth it, right? How about $50.00 - $85.00 PLUS TOLL(S) AND TIP EACH WAY!!!!????? C'mon now! There has to be a better way!
PLEASE! ANYONE WITH ANY IDEAS?????????????????????

  • What tolls? How big are your dogs? Many people have had success with getting regular cab/car service to take them. Zipcar, but if you aren't already signed up it is too late.
  • I've found that renting a moving van/truck is cheaper than regular car rentals as long as you keep the miles down. You can probably make a trip to Manhattan and back for about $50...plus gas.

Alternatively, the NYC subway regulations just state that you dog must be in a "container". So, depending on the size, you can try and get creative with that definition. Or purchase one of those fold-down dog crates and lock it to something outside the subway station while you are in Manhattan with the dog.
  • THANKS DICKIE DAN! Great tips/ideas! Youre a tricky one! :)
  • Also, if you carry a pet in a Zipcar, they too must be in carriers.
