It's the season for visitors at our apartment and I'm trying to sort out some activities before folks get here.

My dad would probably enjoy some kitchen or restaurant gadget/supply stores and I do not know where they are.

Where can I take him for this in Brooklyn or Manhattan?

    The little store on 7th ave in the slope is a little over-priced and packed, but they have some good stuff there...

    There are a few places in the Chelsea Market and surrounding area that I like to bum through every once in a while.

    Zabar's is always fun.

    For knives, Korin is the best.

    I do not know many in Brooklyn but in Manhattan:

    Bowery for the restaurant supply stores
    Broadway Panhandler for kitchen gadgets
    NY Cake Supply for baking supplies and gadgets

    also, if your folks know what they want, you can always google and find the place with the best prices - I've shockingly found better prices (sale obvi) at places like crate & barrel or sur la table than broadway panhandler when I know what I'm looking for. but if you're just going to browse, I'd hit the stores mentioned in other people's posts - c&b and SLT are chains.

    I'm practically drooling myself looking at this list.

    ...not looking for anything specific. My family is southern and true to form loves food and all that surrounds it. Just browsing these places will be fun, especially for my folks who basically have Wal Mart to meet all needs.

    Seconding the motion for Broadway Panhandler.

    There's also Fish's Eddy for dishware, but you can maybe find some barware there.

    NY Cake is a huge favorite...if you want to stay local, Cook's Companion on Atlantic makes for fun browsing - then, head over to Sahadi for some fun ingredients!

    Kitchen Clique. I'm getting Shun steak knives from them. Don't be put off by all the clutter. It's a really great store for knives, Staub and a whole bunch of other stuff. I will say though that Korin and JB's look very, very enticing.

    I was walking south on Bowery in Manhattan, from Houston today and there were restaurant supply stores galore! Most of what I saw was big equipment, but I saw some chair stores, dishes, etc.

    There's great stuff in those places. I got a great set of 12 ceramic tiki cups shaped like Easter Island heads (the kind for tropical drinks at cheesy Polynesian restaurants) for just a few bucks in one of them.

    Fish'sEddy is ok, and I second the Bowery nomination for some interesting stuff.

    I still pop in to Pearl River, but I liked their old location better when they were a bit unknown and cheaper

    I second the vote for the old Pearl River.....the stairs helped to keep the secret. Best, best, best on-a-budget present shopping: I think I gave everyone tea sets one Christmas.

    Not sure how "into it" your pops is, but he might enjoy going to Bridge Kitchenware at 711 3rd Avenue before they refocus operations to their NJ warehouse on June 15, 2008. Bridge is a unique family owned store with a great tradition. The store is put together in an idiosyncratic way that takes time to reveal itself. Definitely find some things there that you will not find anywhere else. A couple of blocks from the UN makes it a two-fer as far as sightseeing goes.

    I went to Bridge a couple of weeks ago. It's probably my favorite kitchen store. This is why I hate to say it's not worth going. Their inventory is just low because of the move. I mean except for some nice copperware they really had nothing to offer.

    Sad, not for them. Sounds like a good move for them. And the serious will go to NJ. Or their website. But sad for NYC. So many of the places that you could say "only in New York" about have closed.

    Broadway Panhandler is fantastic; my wife and I dropped $100 there last week and are going back for more! Fish's Eddy used to be good for overstock stoneware, but they got hip to the fact that yuppies go for this stuff and their prices went skyward. If you want restaurant quality stuff and have time, shop The Bowery.
