A monument to big dreams forged in steel and stone, the Brooklyn Bridge’s completion marked the beginning of a modern New York. Today, locals and visitors alike continue to celebrate this landmark for its critical role as an East River crossing, its magnificent architecture and its history. The resurgence and growth of Lower Manhattan, along with the ongoing Brooklyn renaissance, guarantee the Bridge will carry on Roebling’s vision for a structure that is both emblematic of and essential to the thriving New York City community.

This Memorial Day weekend, Brooklyn and Manhattan will celebrate the Bridge’s 125th anniversary with a host of events honoring the structure’s historic and cultural significance.

Read on for more information about the free festivities, go to the Official Guide for a complete schedule.

  • Wow. I remember the centennial. My 5th grade class (PS 251 class 5-301 Mrs. Movitz represent!) did a whole unit on the history of the bridge, culminating in a class trip where we all walked over the bridge.

But why is the celebration on 5/22 when the bridge opened on 5/24?

It isn't. That is just the first day of a four day extravaganza. Click the link posted above for the rest.
  • happy birthday, bridge. I'll be celebrating with your totally not-as-awesome faux-counterpart in Vegas on Thursday night.

    xoxoxo
  • I remember watching the centennial fireworks down at the foot of the bridge.
To this day I still think that it was the best fireworks display this city has ever put on. I hope this one can be as good.
  • I'm thinking I'll head over to Lucali's or the Chipshop and grab dinner and wander over to see the fireworks. I'm such a sucker for fireworks, I get all excited like a kid again.
  • MOD NOTE: thread derailing Vegas talk split off to its own thread in The Lounge.

POSTER NOTE: Thank you for removing the thread derailing Vegas talk, the Brooklyn Bridge deserves our full respect!

Umm thanks for the conversation about Prince and Vegas, the Brooklyn Bridge is very relevant.

    I love the Brooklyn Bridge!

  • Brooklyn Bridge, I love commuting over you in the morning when you're empty.

However in the evenings I must opt for your less-attractive counterpart, the Manhattan Bridge.
  • I remember the 100 year one too.

The Manhattan Bridge is beautiful as well, its not a competition

  • True. The ride isn't nearly as pretty though. The wooden planks and stone arches of the Brooklyn bridge are nicer than the metal railings and highway feel of the Man. Bridge path.
  • I'm doing the nike run celebration tonight. Over the bridge, a 4.8 mile run in total, ending in brooklyn somewhere (I think) and starting in lower manhattan somewhere (I forget where).
    Yippee to Bridge running!
  • What time does the run start tonight? Does this mean I shan't be taking that bridge on my bike?
  • Is it 125 now? I thought after 100 they would wait until 150 or 200. Ever since '83 no fire works display has matched the BB Centennial.
  • Tabla Rasa in Sunset Park opens its exhibit today (Thursday, May 22nd). The information is here:

(sorry about the wicked long links...I never remember how to work this board to cleverly insert them as a word.)
  • Let us not forget that it's FLEET WEEK!

This is just a highlight! There is even MORE on the link above!

  • Was anyone on this board at the fireworks celebration last night? I forgot it was happening. I'm mostly looking for opinions from folks who saw the '83 celebration and last night's for a comparison. Anyone?

It was a good firework show but no where near the 83 celebration.
'83 also had a radio simulcast (like July 4 does) but this one didn't have one that I know of.
  • I tried to see the fireworks from the roof but the @#$!%#@ damn high-rise building (those 30 story monstrosities) completely blocked my view.

On the other hand, did anyone see that sunset?!? It was amazing, soo beautiful.. full of reds and silver. Very nice.
  • I missed it and am disappointed I was not there to photograph everything. Hopefully someone did so and will post it to the flickr pool.
