I got my Toshiba lcd from Amazon too. It was at least $100-$200 less than Circuit City/Best Buy.
We bought our Bravia from Amazon. Cheaper than any bricks-and-mortar store and free shipping!
Plus you don't have to schlep it home or pay for delivery.
Take a look at warehousedeals.com - it's run by Amazon...sometimes they have really good deals on TVs...may be open box in some cases, so keep an eye out if that sort of thing scares you. I got an open box samsung tv from them for 30% off the best new price I could find (and abt 45% off best buy, circuit city, etc)...no complaints. -
You should also compare prices at JandR which is pretty good price wise locally
-
If you're talking about J&R in the Slope I agree. It's where I bought my LCD Bravia.
-
this thread has some good advice...LCDs for 40 and below, plasma for 50 and above. i went with LCD (40inch).
I found sony bravia xbr4 or xbr5, samsung series 71 and series 81 are generally the best reviewed. Sharp aquos had some bad stories.
cnet and avsforum.com have solid information. on avsforum you can find very detailed threads on specific models. try searching one model vs another model and you'll find discussions.
i suggest spending a couple weeks looking at prices online. i found my LCD for $800 off after a couple weeks. j and r in manhattan is the best in my opinion for shopping after you have done your research. -
online purchase is definitely the way to go for cheap prices, but i would suggest going into a brick&mortar store during your decision process just to see the set in person, taking care to ignore all the sales reps trying to sell you crap.
me, i couldn't wait two weeks for online delivery and bought from a physical store. price wise, i think J&R and B&H has the best deals around, take note that B&H is run by hasidics and is closed/don't deliver on saturdays.
if you're going to buy LCD, avoid the brand Akai. As my gf's sister found out, the capacitors on the power boards in their sets have this problem of exploding right after the warranty expires. -
Wow. Youse guyses are the best! I am now armed with information and ready to roll. I mean, who would'a known I need separate cables?! Thanks arches and everyone for such specific advice! You saved me a ton of time. As I am not part of the "geek elite" I tend to go blind when researching this stuff on my own.
Guess I'm gonna throw out that tangled web of old cables too...apparantly they will serve no purpose in the future, other than to frustrate you. -
ok, so I'm going to pick up my new LCD TV tomorrow. Found a fantastic deal online through a Sharp "friends and family" discount -- got a 46" set that lists at $3000 for $1700. The catch is I have to pick it up between 10 and 3 tomorrow at their warehouse in Mahwah, NJ. (At least I'm hoping it's a company warehouse and not, say, a semi in an alley attended by a few fellows with a taste for tracksuits and hair products.)
Anyway ... anyone who's got a set of that size: How easy is it to move the thing while it's in its box? Do I need to rustle up a helper, or can I move it myself? -
We've been loving our Panasonic plasma. Mr. OQ did tons of research and decided on picking one up at a store due to issues with actually getting shipments at home.
He is easily annoyed by sales folk, but was impressed by the folks who helped him at the Manhattan J&R. They actually directed him to a cheaper model than what he had in mind that had the added feature of a low-glare screen. They don't do delivery, but gave him the number of a man with a van type service that gave him and the tv a lift. I don't think the van guy helped him with the box, though.
My only gripe is that we use Time Warner and so far all of the DVR boxes (HD and non) we have had suck

Their friend and family deals are legit.
You're either going to need a helper of a some sort of handtruck - the box is large. If you're familar with the cardboard boxes bikes come in, it's about that long and tall but maybe 1.5x as wide. And a 46" box prob weighs 60-80 lbs. While lifting 80 lbs isn't that hard for one person, it can be pretty awkward given the large box...and you DON'T want to drop it! -

Who makes the "progressive scan uploading dvd players?"
If you're going to go HDTV, just be sure to use HDMI cables to connect your components (HD cable box, DVD player, Playstation, etc)... they make a BIG difference compared to component cables. Also, if you don't feel like upgrading to a BluRay player, you can just spent $90 and upgrade to a progressive scan upconverting DVD player. We've been really happy with standard DVDs played on that player. From what I've read, BluRay isn't that dramatically different unless you're a big action/sfx fan. We're going to wait til the prices drop before we upgrade to BluRay.

Almost every manufacturer has them now. A couple examples...
Sony - http://tinyurl.com/6rwc7g
Phillips - http://tinyurl.com/6qp88r
I'm not sure it really makes that big of a difference. The one I have lets me switch between different upconverting resolutions (480, 720, 1080) and I find it hard to notice any variation. -
What was the avg. price someone paid for a Bravia 40" xbr4?
-
I am looking to buy a 40-46" LCD and have been price comparing and seems that Adorama generally has the best prices. B&H is very competitive too, J&R as usual seems to be a little more expensive. I would stay away from Circuit City, Best Buy or PC Richard unless you know the exact model you want as their salespeople tend to be less educated about products and are usually pushing whatever management/corporate tells them to push (yes this is true of most retailers but I have always found that national or major regional chains are the worst). I recommend B&H from my experience with photographic equipment, their prices are right and their salespeople give you information from knowing about all brands and generally don't push you to a brand until they know the price and features you are looking for.

On a CNET price comparison (assuming 11238 as the delivery zip code), the lowest price was $1828, but that was from a vendor that hasn't been rated, so kind of a gamble. The best price (including shipping) from a vendor with a good rating is $1877 from a place with a 5 star rating and $1829 from a place with a 4 star rating.
Here's the comparison at CNet.
It's $2493 from B&H. -
I plan on purchasing the slightly smaller 37" XBR6, yes not 40" but a significantly lower price and also full 1080 HD

Looks like you can get that one for $1499 from Crutchfield.

Or $1395 plus tax (since they have a NY brick and mortar) at B&H:
