Sedation dentistry in the slope? — Brooklynian

Sedation dentistry in the slope?

Does anyone do this around here?
Also- has anyone here had sedation dentistry? My phobia of the dentist is really to the point of making me want to pass out upon entering and has prompted me to not go for an embarrassingly long amount of time. If you've had it, did insurance cover any of it? I know I should call my insurance co, but I thought I'd throw the question out there...

  • Just curious, but have you ever tried nitrous oxide? You know, laughing gas. It gives you that 3 martini kind of feeling (bring it ON!), and couple of strong wiffs of the fresh O, and you're good to go.

    Now for my two cents:
I worked for a dentist (many, actually) who did sedation. He was good, the procedures went well....it's just that, unless someone has to cut you open, sedation isn't your safest bet. People can die under sedation, you really need to have a professional anesthesiologist present, and most dentists do both the dentistry and anesthesia, which I find to be a little too much for one person to handle.
  • Honestly...the level of fear is beyond the point of a phobia. It's totally debilitating...I don't know if there's any possible way I could go through even cleaning if I'm awake in any capacity. Sad, but true.

    I appreciate the feedback, though!
  • Well, if that's the case, then you should seriously do your homework and don't run to the first guy (or gal). That shit makes me nervous.

Also, you can also request and get a small Rx for Valium before your visit to a regular dentist. This is quite typical, actually, and it really helps.
  • I need a large rx for valium. And maybe a shot of nyquil and half a bottle of jack daniels to wash it down with.

    ..kidding

Seriously though, just thinking of the dentist is filling me with panic. I have awesome dental insurance too...I gotta suck it up and go!
  • Carmen, I hear you, I have the same problem. Mt wife thinks I'm nuts, but I just lost a couple of teeth because I let them just crumble in my mouth. I'm down to one molar now, and it's throbbing. I heard about a place called Pleasant Dreams Dental on the radio a few times, but I haven't called them yet.
  • I have the same problem. I had to be put to sleep to have my wisdom teeth removed. If anyone has any ideas about a good place please let me know!

Sedation for oral surgery is very common (especially wisdom teeth), because it's SURGERY performed by surgeons, who although may not have an anesthesiologist on hand, are specifically trained for this. But not dentists.

If I hear of places I'll let you know, but they won't be recommendations.

whatchuwant is absolutely right, don't be getting sedated without an anesthesiologist. yes, people actually die in america getting their wisdom teeth out by oral surgeons not using anesthesiologists.

i'm all about the idea of sedation, i'm terrified of the dentist. i'm far more terrified of dying
  • a couple of happy pills and some gas is the way I'd go over sedation, for all of the reasons already mentioned. I had no choice but to be knocked out for my 3 wisdom teeth because they were so seriously impacted (I found out that they were the worst they'd ever had to do - the oral surgeon had to hack into my jaw and stand on the chair to leverage himself and get my teeth out).

Too much risk to do sedation unless you really HAVE to.

Trust me....I was so scared of dentistry as a kid that my first exam was in the hallway with my dentist looking at my teeth with a flashlight because I refused to go in the exam room. I was a stubborn pain in the ass, but he was a patient doctor!
  • heh. my first dentist somehow convinced me to get in the chair. i prompty bit his finger and vomited all over him.

Ha, BP - there are a lot of jokes there, but since I like ya I'll keep 'em to myself

Over 30 years ago, I was getting a tooth filed, and told the dentist that I wasn't numb enough. He told me he knew what he was doing, then promptly drilled into a nerve. My arms went out, hitting him below the belt; likewise his hygienist. I got a temporary filling and was told that if I ever came back, I'd be arrested for assault. That (except for once to get a very loose tooth yanked) was the last time I went to a dentist. Even just the sound of a drill is enough to get me into panic mode.
  • Just a warning....someone here who is scared of dentists was totally sedated for an extraction (routine extraction)...insurance company refused to pay because it really wasn't surgery.
Just try nitrous oxide...you're somewhat out of it during the procedure, and once you get oxygen back, you're back to normal

Love, love, LOVE the gas. Best high ever. I cracked jokes while getting my wisdom tooth pulled, and I think I may have propositioned the dentist as well.
  • lol. I had a dentist appointment for 9am today. I'm such a chicken ! I ended up not going.I waited till 7am and decided that I don't feel like going and getting a needle jammed into my gums and sit through the damn drilling and then walking home with swollen lips and drool coming down my neck.

Those bastards never offer my scared ass any nitrous oxide! And Whatchuwant , you say that shit makes people high? Damn , what the fuck have I been doing all these years letting those freaks hit me with needle?!
I get all nervous and squirm in the chair , and they say "just relaaaaaaax".
Yeah ok I'll relax just give me some drugs next time bitches.Make this nightmare worth it!

I have to make another appointment. I wonder if they are gonna charge me for not going in today.I didn't call them , and they never called to see if I was still coming.Guess I'll find out when I call to reschedule.
