The Cake Shop (on Ludlow) to open space at Universal Video?!
I got this from reliable sources that Cakeshop [http://cake-shop.com/] will be moving into the Universal Video store space on PPW and 16th!
Is anyone else hearing this?
I hear it's going to be a bar/lounge with some food and a space for readings/music/etc.
I love Bar 4, but this is so much closer! And bigger!

I heard from an also very reliable source, that it's one of the partners in Cake Shop and they are opening a bar. So the original Cake Shop isn't moving, this is just another, new spot.

Cool.
Anybody know what's going in to All For Paws? I saw some workers in there this weekend, but they don't seem to know what it is going to be -
Subject: All for Paws
According to the permit on the door, it's going to be... a liquor store!
Because that's exactly what this neighborhood needs more of.
Construction has unveiled some really cool stained glass above the door -- get there soon to check it out in case construction proceeds to destroy it. I'm going to try to take pics today.
BTW, I'm new here. Came in search of info about the above. Happy to find a community in which at least some people are not in love with the Cancer on my Corner and the pooper on my sidewalk. -

Windsor Liquor is moving from 16th st. to All For Paws.
They had to honor the time left on the lease for Fields Liquor . -
send button got jammed.

Good to hear. Thanks! -
they took the All For Paws sign down and the old "candy, soda, ice cream" stained glass sign that was underneath is showing. It looks cool.
So what moves into Fields? -
Isn't that stained glass cool? I took pics this morning.
Any idea how far back that signage dates? -
ha....I think I saw you taking pics, which made me look up and notice, and then I took a pic

I've been told it goes back to the Forties.
I usually speak with one of the seniors who was a WW2 Vet ,and the next time I see him I'll ask what the name of the ice cream parlor was and when it opened. -
I was just talking with my former neighbor (who has lived here all of his 82 years), who told me what it was called, but I can't remember (half his age and probably half his memory!)...Maybe Meyer's?
-
I spoke with the gentleman I mentioned and he said the original name was Meyer's, who retired and the new owner renamed it Wetters.
He is 85 and said it has been an ice cream parlor going back to the early thirties
I hope they keep the stained glass . -
Too bad the new Italian Ice place, now under construction next to the liquor store, didn't take that spot...
-
new Italian ice place? Please say it isn't another Uncle Louie G's. We don't need a big Hummer on our streets.
-
Nope. It's called Lia's or somesuch.
Mr. Softee will no longer have the t-ball crowd all to himself... -
It's Lia's. Should be open on Weds.

sorry for posting to a basically dead thread... just discovered this.
i'm actually opening the new thing in the universal video space. it's going to be a tailor shop. ha, kidding. it's definitely not going to be cake shop or very cake shop-esque for that matter. well, maybe a little bit. but basically if everything goes according to plan, we'll have a good beer selection, a jukebox with maybe a little too much slade and early rod stewart and of course, the food brought to you by kevin from tiny's... sandwiches, burgers, maybe fish n chips... brunch possibly? of course, i'm jinxing the whole thing right now by talking about it.
anyways, it's really exciting to see people talking about it a bit! do i have the people at dub pies to thank for that?

Yay! Not sure the Dub people had anything to do with it. We just watch the buildings and ask around.

What's the target date? -
oh now, that would really be jinxing it! let's just say sometime this fall.

That's great! I'd love a good alternative to R&B and Farrell's within walking distance -

Thanks for chiming in. Any chance for live music? That's what I want the most! Of course, if there are noise issues, and you only can have acoustic singer-songwriter types, then I prefer that there was no music.

well, maybe. having the option for an occasional show would be nice. but yeah, a singer-songwriter situation would never happen. unless i suddenly become a total turd. :P

I like Windsor Terrace just as a quiet neighborhood. So my initial reaction is I’m not too crazy about seeing a trendy Lower East Side club open a second branch here. But we’ll see exactly what happens with this place.
-
and that's a sentiment i share as well (i live in the WT too). this isn't going to be a club or a second branch of cake shop at all... besides that type of place not fitting in with the area, i've basically always wanted to open a "neighborhood pub" type place (good food, good beer selection/wine/cocktails, jukebox) which i DO think will fit into the area pretty well. (i hope)

When I wrote that I hadn’t read the whole thread / I didn’t realize you, the owner, looked on this board.
First off I’ve never been to the Cake Shop in Manhattan so I don’t know exactly what to expect. If this new place really goes for a low key approach then it could be very nice. But if it goes for the “hippest, hottest club in NYC” approach, then I personally won’t be too happy about it - although a lot of other people probably would be. -
I'm very much looking forward to a good neighborhood pub. Bring it on!
Will there by chance be a dart board???????? That would make me smile big. -
it would be really nice if they had a sauvignon blanc from new zealand. and good bar snacks.

Considering that at one point PPW had a vaudeville theater (the Pavillion) and multiple bars besides Farrells (one on the corner of 17th, another near Windsor Bagels, possibly more), I would say the Windsor Terrace never used to be this quiet.
That said, Cakeshop is not a trendy LES club. It is a pastry-shop/record-store/performance-space. No velvet ropes or burly bouncers.
Where can my band sign up to play on opening night? -
Windsor Terrace has only been a quiet neighborhood since we put the air conditioner in the front window.
-

i've been talking about having darts all along! but now it's looking like it might not fit into the floorplan so well. that is, unless people don't mind ducking when they walk out of the bathroom. but hey, maybe we could get away with the velcro darts instead?
