Neighborhhood question
Hello! My husband and I are considering looking at an apartment on
Montgomery St between Rogers and Nostrand. We are wondering what the
area is like? Grocery, delis, stores, subway and mostly the "feel" of
the area. Safe, friendly, schools, etc.
Feel free to contact me off-line!
Many thanks in advance!

Welllllllllll, you have an Associated Supermarket on Nostrand. The 2 and 5 train at the Sterling subway stop. A Chase Bank and a Carver Savings Bank on Nostrand and Empire. Post Office on Empire, I think between Nostrand and Rogers. A 24 hour laundromat at Empire and Rogers. A spanish restaurant on Nostrand, along with a variety of Carribean restaurants. Police Station on New York and Empire. An elementary school on Empire between Nostrand and New York. A Western Beef Supermarket around Empire and Washington. A Gothic Cabinet place on Empire around that area also. The Botanical Garden, Prospect Park Zoo and Prospect Park within walking distance. I don't know of any problems in the area but someone in the immediate vicinity can answer better than me. I have walked down Empire Blvd late at night many times and never seen any issues. The B44 and B43 are easily accessible if you take the bus. That's all I can think of right now but if I think of anything else, I will post again.

I am on Montgomery and Rogers as well. This is a great little area, it's not really "hip" and not really "sketchy"... just kind of a regular neighborhood. Lots of families and friendly folks.
In terms of amenities, there are 2 good pizza places and a coffee shop on Bedford. There is also Tavern on Nostrand (on Nostrand duh and President) which has solid food (good burgers, salads, streak frites, etc.) Toomey's diner is nice too! The deli on Montgomery and Rodgers is OK. There are a few open markets on Nostrand with fruits and vegetables. Western Beef is awesome, fish monger and a walk in meat locker with carnal cuts. Otherwise the previous post covered it well.
Don't know anything about the schools... Safety, yeah, it's safe.
Tell me if there is anything else you want to know.:) -
I live on that block, probably in the very building you're checking out.
All in all, it's a very liveable part of the neighborhood. We've had absolutely no safety issues in the year we've been here and have found the neighbors welcoming.
The above 2 posters covered the amenities pretty well, but I'd add that the 2/5 at President St and the 3 at Nostrand Ave are probably as close as Sterling. Plus, the Q/B at Prospect Park are within a 10-15 minute walk and probably offer the fastest way in to most parts of Manhattan. The Associated at Franklin has a bit more in the way of organic stuff than the one on Nostrand, and there's a warehouse beer place just south of Empire on Franklin.
It's true that it's not particularly "hip" over here, but you'd be within about 15 minutes from both the new stuff happening on Franklin north of EP and on Lincoln Road in PLG. -

If you wanted to, you can take a long walk along Eastern Parkway to Park Slope, on the other side of Prospect Park. -
There are a few clubs in the area so things do get crazy but rarely, mostly in the summer mostly on weekends.

Not to hijack the thread but what is going on with Lincoln Road? I did not know that it was a "destination" for the neighborhood so please enlighten me. Thanks. -
I really had no intention of perpetuating the "hip" in quotes thing. Let's just say that there are a couple of newer businesses on Lincoln Road between Flatbush and Ocean Ave.
K-Dog and Dunebuggy is a coffee shop that also hosts art events for local artists. On weekends, they project movies onto fairly good-sized screen. Last weekend, for example, I noticed they showed "The Control Room."
Right next door is Enduro, which serves better than average Mexican food. Brunch is worthwhile, and they make good Margaritas.
That's about it, so it's not exactly a destination. But what's striking is that both of these businesses seem to do very well, and the customers seem to be a healthy mix of old and new neighborhood residents.
To bring it back around to the question from the original poster, what's nice about living on the south side is that you can take advantage of things in PLG/Flatbush as well as CH. -
Ahhh, gotcha. I thought it was something a little different. But back to the OP and the neighborhood. Like you said you can take advantage of things in PLG as well as CH but you also have the option of taking advantage of things in Prospect Heights and North Crown Heights since it is just across the Parkway and it seems like new restaurants and bars are opening up monthly. If you decide to take the apartment, I think you will enjoy the neighborhood.
Howdy, Stranger!
