Chickens!!!
So I'm pretty sure our neighbors a few doors down have chickens in their backyard. Someone who lives behind my building (who has views into my neighbors' backyards) mentioned it to me and I wasn't sure I believed it, but then Sunday morning I heard them clucking away. It doesn't bother me, but everyone I've mentioned it to asks the same thing -- is this legal? Is there some kind of ordinance against having farm animals in your Brooklyn back yard? Seems like not.
You know, it was actually kind of nice to hear them that morning. But if they get a rooster, so help me god...
Has anyone else experienced this? Or other animals? Goats, perhaps?

Red Hook has a few chickens in backyards. I'm not sure if it's legal. I don't really mind. In the last area I lived in there was a rooster somewhere on the block. I liked hearing it, I don't know, maybe it was just me.

Hens are legal. Roosters are not. Chickens are actually great for the garden - they eat snails, slugs, etc.

The city allows you to keep a farm animal if you intend on marrying it

There was a pretty interesting article last year on a guy who was trying to feed himself on things he grew in his backyard in brooklyn. He had chickens...and rabbits. It wasn't entirely successful, but think of all the money you could save on those $6/doz eggs from the farmers mkt...as long as the chickens don't eat your $14/lb mesclun mix.

You don't seem like a troll, so I assume it is just random. FYI, this is making the rounds on the Park Slope Parents group, Gowanus Lounge and Curbed right now. -

Why would I be a troll? Because this is already on the PSP and Curbed? Just wondering.
But, for the record, I'm not a troll. I'm actually a magical elf. With chickens next door. -

Because there has been a recent influx of quasi to full fledged trolls drumming up comments that then appear on curbed, gowanus, even nytimes.

You go with your bad elf self.
Or something. -
daver seems like an apology is in order
a quick check of torisoaw's posting history would not indicate any potential trolling
its uncalled for to make accusations without any evidence based on a hunch -

arock75, it seems an apology is in order. It is uncalled for to make accusations without actually reading what I said.
Sheesh.
Pull 'em out already. -
i am not apologizing
why would you bring up trolling in the first place? -

As long as you do your due diligence into the sanitation issues, it could be cool. Will you share your eggs? -
People, people, people...
No more chickens at Union Hall, please.

My in laws raised a lot of chickens (and had roosters) for many many years. The smell and the bugs were terrible. I guess if its one or two chickens it may be containable but it can get smelly. As the old neighbors moved out and new ones moved in there were quite a few complaint calls to Animal Control and the Health Dept. It was great to have fresh eggs though

Hmmm...how many is a lot?
Apparently they produce abt an egg a day per chicken...so 2 would probably be plenty, unless someone was a big egg eater (or had a big family). -
Did anyone read the comments on the Curbed link. They are pretty funny

My fave:you know I am so sick of these park slope hens and their sense of entitlement. They clog up the sidewalk with their chicks and whine about the lack of organic feed in the park. They've ruined the neighborhood!!!!

Time to start a thread on chicken friendly stores!
People will want to exercise their chickens and run errands at the same time. -

There were at least 20.
My father in law grew up on farms in Puerto Rico and continued part of that lifestyle when he moved to Brooklyn.arches wrote: Apparently they produce abt an egg a day per chicken...so 2 would probably be plenty, unless someone was a big egg eater (or had a big family).
I wouldn't be surprised if it was more than an egg a day -there were so many eggs (plus some that hatched adding to the chicken count) that they gave most of them away to the neighbors and food pantries. I did notice that there were quite a high number of double yolks in the fresh eggs. -

Darn fertility drugs. No wonder I've seen so many double-wide poaching cups out lately. -
Had a problem years ago with a neighbor keeping loud clucking, noisy chirping chickens, hens, or whatever in a back yard. At the time, former Mayor Giuliani had a crusade against noise (and many other things), so one call to the authorities shut those birds up. No idea if you can complain against loud birds today.

I love fresh-just-popped-out-of-the-chicken eggs as much as anyone and appreciate South American towns where you can grab a chicken on the spot. HOWEVER....

This dude making eggs in Brooklyn would be cool if the guy lived out in the middle of the country, but in urban environments where people who want to smell chicken shit and hear chickens chirping at 5am live next to people who don't enjoy any of that, it's called being a jackass neighbor. Farmers live in the country for a reason. -
but you don't hold any strong opinions, do you?

The chickens went nuts on Monday morning around 8:30am. I think something must've spooked them. I'm thinking Templeton the rat from Charlotte's Web.
Anyway, jolting awake at the sound of alarmed chickens is not a fun way to start the day. Just sayin'. -

It was same for me when I moved into the North Slope 25 years ago. I heard a neighbor's rooster every morning. I liked it. -
