estranged friend is going to abandon cat on my doorstep June

Hello,

I was just informed by an estranged friend that she is going to abandon a cat on my doorstep June 26th that belonged to me and my x 4 years ago.
I am not allowed pets in my apartment and my landlord lives right above me.
We have no lease and I fear that if I disobey him he will ask us and my son to leave.

Does anyone know anyone or want a beautiful calico cat?

Thanks in advance and please help get the word out.

  • Shit man, where do you live? I can't take the kitty in (not for more than a day or two -really allergic) but if you can have it at your place for a couple days I'm sure the cat lovers on this board can come up with options. Have a heart, sneak it in and there are resources for you to employ. I'll look though my old links for resources. :cat: :(
  • Read The "Pet Law"
    http://www.tenant.net/Rights/pets.html

    This is what it says:
Under the "Pet Law", if a landlord fails, within three months of his knowledge of a tenant's open and notorious harboring of a pet, to enforce any applicable "no pet" provision, then any such provision is deemed void. The law applies to unit owners, as well as renters, in co-ops and condos, whether private or government subsidized.

Has your landlord strictly forbidden pets in your apartment or does it just say no pets in your lease? Obviously what I wrote above does not apply to the former. But maybe you could keep the cat!
  • Thanks for the offering and the advice!
Unfortunately, the landlord said that I could not have pets at the onset and its just 4 apartments in a aluminum sided brownstone (yes), so hard to be sly.
  • I can see why she is a "former" friend! Why is she abandoning the cat?

Be aware that, in addition to being cruel, it's a crime to abandon an animal. (To report animal abuse, contact the ASPCA NYC Humane Law Enforcement Department at [email protected] or (212) 876-7700, ext. 4450.)

Here is a list of local shelters and rescue organizations you can try, although they tend to be overloaded, so it's best if you can re-home the animal on your own.

Post a photo if you can--cute pics always help!
  • Thank you very much for the leads and the info.
Estranged friend is abandoning cat for month long trip as I understand it.
I will look into those shelters and make fliers.
  • So this person can take the cat back after a month?? If you put the cat in a shelter there's a good chance it will be euthanized. I really don't recommend that. Would the "friend" be willing to take the cat back if you find a home for him/her for a month?

Also, even though you don't have a lease (which I just re-read), tenants have a lot of rights. So your landlord can't very easily kick you out for having a cat. If we assume you're a good tenant, then he really has nothing on you to kick you out--even a cat. I'm sure he's more worried about dogs barking and cats scratching up the apartment. Do you recall if the cat is pretty vocal or is it quiet? If it's quiet, if I were you I would take him in--at least for the month if your "friend" is willing to take it back.

Definitely post some pictures! That always tugs at the heartstrings.
  • You are so kind!

Is there a place to post a picture here? She is very beautiful.
Estranged friend is very hostile, when asked to send a recent image of the cat so I could start looking, she sent me an image of Johnny Cash giving the finger...
    Thank you
  • Do you know if the cat gets along with other cats?
  • Wow sounds like a bitch. I wouldn't want her as a fiend or in charge of the care of any pet.

Stories like this reinforce my hate for humans, it's not a good thing.
  • Is the friend gonna take the cat back upon her return?
  • Or I guess, would she?
  • I dont know if she gets along with other cats, honestly. She has been an only child except for her first couple of years when a roommate had a cat and they sometimes fought but not seriously, I am going to bet no but I dont want to close any doors.

She wants to get rid of the cat for good, I wont go into detail just plan on having an abandoned cat that used to be mine and I love but am not allowed to have where I live now... So just being as proactive as possible.
    Thanks for everyones support here.
  • Oh my that is AWFUL!!!!!!!!!! Hey did you post this in Brooklyn Pets? I bet you can find a foster there. I have seen some amazingly caring people on that list. Also, even if you scan in an old picture of the kitty, it will be more better. :} Best of luck!!!!
  • thanks for the lead, I had never heard of them, I will check right now.
I do have an old picture of her and am working on a flier right now.
