Java Indonesian Restaurant

I did a search but only got stuff from 06... the boyfriend and I tried this place a few weeks ago after living nextdoor for months and have eaten there 3 times since. He's a pretty big food snob and we've been LOVING this place. Just a heads up to anyone in south slope...it's located on 16th and 7th, for reference :)

  • I've walked past that place countless times and it always looks empty (but I usually walk through in daylight).

Glad to know it's good. What did you have to eat?
  • We've had.. (I actually have the menu actually in front of me)
Lamb Sate (my least favorite thing so far but still good)
    Kroket

    Ayam Belado
    Udang Tumis
    Sambal Goreng Udang

and my boyfriend had some chicken curry dish that they recommended because he loves spicy stuff. I had the two shrim dishes (last two on the list) and both were awesome.
  • Anyone tried their rijsttafel? Every time I walk by I want to give it a try, but I haven't had the courage yet.
  • the gf and i did. it was great. it's such a sweet little place. if we lived closer, we'd go all the time.
  • This place has been in business for a loooooong time and has always been a lovely place. It is small.. it is quiet... the service is lovely and the food is wonderful... though the plates are "small"... That makes it perfect if you have 4 or 6 people. 12 people and you have filled up half the restaurant at least. We haven't eaten here in a while. Gotta try again.
  • My husband and I tried the rijsttafel...we LOVED it! We went there a few months ago and keep meaning to go back. It's a real gem!

What is this stuff? I am intrigued.

I wonder how far the deliver.

    Must go!
  • I wrote this on CitySearch:

My husband and I ordered the dish for two (Rijsttafel) and it was $35.95 with all sorts of small dishes to share--lamb, beef, chicken, shrimp, cod, and veggies PLUS our own soup appetizer and dessert and coffee/tea. We really enjoyed all of it. The sauces for the dishes were curry, peanut, tamarind and some others. Some dishes were spicier than others, but nothing was super spicy. The service was very nice and mellow, not hurried and the food came out fairly quickly. We came in with no expectations and were really happy with everything. We plan to go back a lot now that we know it's so good and very reasonable. Definitely try it!!
  • it's worth a trip..it comes pretty close to the food you'd get in indonesia. some of its spicy but it's a great cuisine for someone who enjoys thai and/or indian food. we've tried the rice table as well as a la carte dishes and both times it was a great experience. very mellow place..well worth my 11 block walk =)

what we need is a decent indian restaurant in the slope. everything tastes like its been freeze dried or some fusion bs.
