You might want to check out the Newbury (sp?) or Caldecott (sp?) Awards book list or some such lists...

What age kids? I don't remember much of the book, but I remember that Island of the Blue Dolphins pretty much made a reader out of me... oh, and Stone Fox, Where the Red Ferns Grow, The Outsiders, etc, etc, etc. These are probably suitable for what? 9-ish +?

how old are we talking? cause boy do i have a million of these. here are two off the top of my head:
for really little (runaway bunny through spot age), i love goodnight gorilla. it's also proved to be a good one for families who don't primarily speak english, as there are so few words that it's easily translated for the kids.
for a little older (frog and toad age-ish), hog-eye is funny, has a great girl (pig) who triumphs over a wolf by being smart and literate, and, for the baby literary theorist in your life, introduces the concept of the unreliable narrator. -
Yes!
Caps For Sale
A Bear Called Paddington

Sam, Bangs & Moonshine
The Island of the Skog
Much Bigger Than Martin

I love The Giving Tree, but the picture of Shel Silverstein on the back cover is enough to scarey any kid to death

I swear I will still cry if I read The Giving Tree today.
-

Ha! Yeah, I can still see that picture in my mind's eye. It made an impression.
Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is a good one. Originally part of The Jungle Book, but generally available seperately and illustrated.
Also, Lizard Music by D. Manus Pinkwater. -
the giving tree is my favorite book ever
