Gass bill too high?
My roommates and I just moved into our new place, and paid our gas bill for the first time. For an apartment with a gas stove and hot water heater, but no actual heat, our gas bill was over $70. Is this normal? I've never had gas before, so I have no idea, but it seems really high. Any suggestions? We're considering shutting our hot water heater off entirely and taking cold showers from here on out to save money....

doesn't seem horribly high. Also gas prices have gone through the roof in the past few years.
It ain't just gas for your car... -
Is the hot water heater hot to the touch? If so you need to insulate it and its wasting gas to keep hot.

Subject: balanced billing plan
sign up for the balanced billing plan with National Grid (Keyspan). they will set you at one flat rate per month that may be lower than that.
that sounds normal, btw, since you have a gas hot water heater. -
Subject: Thanks
Thanks for the help. I also should have clarified that we just moved, so the bill was only from the 12-28th. So is our bill really going to be double that for the rest of the summer? I also turned down the temp on the hot water heater as soon as I got home. -
If this is your first bill, isnt the first bill higher? Call National Grid and have them explain it to you. That does seem a little high for 2 months.I pay about 35 dollars for 2 months.

Our gas bills over the winter were UNBELIEVABLE. I'm talking $280 for two months for me and my room-mate (and I'm not even home, and we didn't use heat.)
Low and behold..they were giving us estimated bills. Since OCTOBER. So your bill may not be based on a meter read, but an estimate for other apartments of that size in a similar building. Your paper bill will include this info somewhere. -
Call your own meter reading in if you have access to your meter. Chances are it's estimated. Just call them up with it and they will send out a new bill (and waive the late fee probably). We do it every month... really not a big deal.

 Holy hell, that's what may have been happening all along with OUR gas bill -- our gas bill for March was $480 for two months, for two people.

Unfortunately, the bills were in my roommate's name, and she had direct payment and never looked at the statements (but sometimes forgot to ask me for my share, though, so I may have still short-changed her). She's moved out, though, and turned everything over to me, and I've requested paper billing -- and it looks like this has been a wise move.
Plus, the Keyspan agent showed me where my meter was for my apartment, and the door to the meters is unlocked, so I could easily take my own reading if I had to.
VERY good to know. Thanks for posting this. -

That is what happened to me last year when I moved into my apartment, except with ConEd. I was going to put in an AC unit, but then I got these huge electricity bills and figured I couldn't afford AC if that is what it cost me to run a fridge, microwave, and lights. So I sweated through the summer, and then around October I think they actually read the meter and I had WAY overpaid. I didn't have to pay electricity again for close to six months. Well, now I know. And knowing is half the battle.

The other half is killing and maiming. Of course. -
Uhm....when did this tenant pays for heat and hot water thing start? I am 37 years old and have lived here all my life and heat and hot water included in rent has ALWAYS been standard forever. The first I hear of this tenant paying thing is this year.
