Vernor's?

Did you try Eagle Provisions on 5th and ????? (south slope)
-
I've never seen it there. Maybe I should ask, or maybe I should ask Lee's grocery about carrying it. But I just begged them to carry Claussen pickles and don't want to ask for something else right now.
-
there is a thread about this on Chowhound:

looks like there is a place or two in NYC. good luck! -
Wow, Kitchen? I stopped in there years ago for Mexican stuff but would never have thought they would carry Vernor's. Thanks, I'll see if they still have it.
Vernor's is a thing unto itself - much more potent than regular ginger ale, but without the oversweetness/extraneous spiciness of ginger beer. -
Closest to NYC I could ever find Vernor's was Buffalo or Rochester.
Always brought home a lot. Don't think they have a downstate distributor.
Even though I am not from Michigan, I took a liking to Vernors when working for a time in Detroit.
If you really have a jones for it Amazon.com sells Vernors. -
I ordered some Vernor's online and am really disappointed. They obviously changed the formula and it is less gingery and fizzy. Vernor's should tickle your nose so you almost sneeze. This stuff has no tickle at all.
It was bad enough when Squirt (my favorite soda as a kid) was changed to make it less grapefruity and more sweet but Vernor's should be sacred.
People screw everything up. :x :x -
Nothing against Vernor's (except that it's probably corn syrup-sweetened) but you may want to try Blenheim's Ginger Ale from down South. Not only is it not too sweet--and sweetened with cane sugar--but there's also a spicy variety available. Great stuff. I've seen it in NYC, maybe Bierkraft??

Vernor's was originally sweetened with stevia until the FDA decided to ban stevia and they unfortunately switched to corn syrup.
When I was a kid we used to pour clear Karo corn syrup on our pancakes ... -

Yeah, but that was when corn syrup was really corn syrup. -
I've had Vernor's since I was a child. I've had it all the over the CONUS.
If you have really looked---Dean & Deluca, Trader Joe, etc.---, send me a message. I'll ship the Vernor's from here. -
i think that the ice cream shop on vanderbilt (run by an ex-detroiter) carries vernor's and uses it is their boston coolers.
-
I'm afraid I think I'm over Vernor's now. No champagne tickle = feh. :?
-
Another ex-Detroiter here who resorts to begging relatives to bring cases of Vernor's & Faygo whenever they drive in to visit. However, I've yet to try a Boston cooler (or "Detroit egg cream" as the sign there says) from the ice cream shop on Vanderbilt.
I'd think that freshness matters. Odds are that any cans or bottles of Vernor's found in the neighborhood have been sitting on the shelf for weeks or months. It won't be as fizzy as it should be fresh from the factory. -
I ordered mine online from vernors.com, it should be fresh. (I also bought some Sanders hot fudge topping from the site.)
"Detroit egg cream", that's pretty funny. -
awww, Sanders had that amazing chocolate cake w/the cream layer below the chocolate frosting...mmm. Vernors w/a lil' vanilla ice cream makes the best floats - I haven't had another ginger soda that compares (maybe it's the barrel aging? not sure). now you've got me thinking about 'Red Pop' too
-
Ah, red pop. http://youtube.com/watch?v=LQqyDj7RX6Y (Yes, I'm old enough to remember this on TV.)
I've seen Vernor's in western N.C. and even Los Angeles. Next time I go to that wholesale place on Washington and Bergen I'll ask if they can work some magic. -
I've bought Vernor's at Lompoc (CA), San Antonio (TX), Warrensburg (MO), Indialantic (FL), Norfolk (VA), etc. and enjoyed the sneeze.
If you tell me NY doesn't have any stores, I will believe you. But, we are talking about NY...... -
I'm fairly sure I've purchased Vernor's in PA too.
(thanks for the 'red pop' clip, detem, I remember that ad!) -
I just got back from Ohio and picked up a case of Vernor's to bring back with me. The intense genger flavor is wonderful but I don't remember it being this sweet, or have I just grown up?
I will continue making my own after I drink this -
Jack, did you save some for Laura? I look for it everywhere for her (and for me, because I want to try it). I'll have to check by my mom in PA
-
almost every soda I loved as a kid and even into my 20s is now basically too sweet for me. it's kinda sad.
-
Never had it.
Vernors Ginger Ale Collectors Club:
Vernors Ginger Ale and Hire's Root Beer. A winning combination. Although they won't be running in 2008 as presidential hopefuls, they will always share the title of America's oldest soda pops.
The Vernors ginger ale story, though, is one of war and triumph. James Vernor was off to serve in the American Civil War in 1862. Before he left he sat down and put together a concoction of ginger, vanilla and spices. After doing so, he placed the brew in an oak cask and set out to do his patriotic duty.
Four years later, upon arriving home, battle-weary, he reached inside the cask and took a long, cool pull on what he cried was a "deliciously different" knock back.
And, on that day, Vernors Ginger Ale was born, along with it's "deliciously different' slogan.
All of this happened a very long time ago, and there are many different types of soda pops on the market today in America, and around the world.
However, there is one man who loves Vernors and the Vernors memorabilia so much that he decided to start a collectors club. I was able to talk to Keith Wunderlich a little bit about the club, how it got started, and what his future plans are.
People can go to the club website at www.wowway.com/~vernors/index.html and hit the "Join the Club" button. All the information they need is right there. Anyone with questions can email me at [email protected] .
ABS) What are your future plans for Vernor's Ginger Ale Collector's Club?
The Vernor's Club will continue to have quarterly newsletter and an annual show and sale. During 2008, we are concentrating on James Vernor I, II, III and Vernor Davis. So, there will be quite a bit of history this year. In our Winter 2008 edition, there's an interview with James Vernor IV.
New for 2008 is the start of a Vernor's blog on the web site. In April, a book will be published about Vernor's Ginger Ale by Arcadia Publishing. I wrote the book and mention the Vernor's Club in it. As club members suggest other new things, we'll continue to explore new directions.
