Sex Store Accross From School
I noticed that the pink pussycat boutique is directly accross the street from a junior high on fifth avenue in Brooklyn. I was wondering if there are zoning restrictions for things like that. Thankfully my kids do not go to that school. but I am wondering how this has been allowed? Does anyone know anything about it?

There was a stink when it opened. There were petitions and there was hullabaloo and then everyone realized at once that it didn't matter.
-
There's nothing in the windows and they're not open during school hours.
Kids are all probably looking at worse things like nasty internet porn at home.
Poor kids, growing up afraid of their own sexuality. -
Gotta love the person that creates a new account simply to rehash old news.

To wit: a search of the discussion board rings up quite a few results. Amazing! -
Actually they are open during school hours and they do have sex toys in their display window. Maybe they didn't back then but they sure do now. I guess some people who do not supervise their kids can see it as oh well they see that stuff online, but there are some actual parents out there who make sure that a fifth grader does know what a dildo is. Also sex shops and porn do not make you comfortable with your sexuality, and there is such a thing as age appropriateness. I mean a fifth grader is not legally allowed to go to a rated R movie, but he can view sex toys... Then again it is a public school so I guess that's how they got away with it.
-
yep, it has been open for around 10 years. i remember the brouhaha at the time. you can be sure that if the neighbohood still thought it was a problem they'd have gotten the store shuttered years ago.
-
Is this not for the Park Slope board? This is Greenwood Heights/Sunset Park, yo.
-
It's hardly a raunchy display, and yeah, it should be on the Park Slope board. Of course, if you live in Sunset Park (same district, so I suppose your child could go to that school!), you could request that it be cross-posted. We've got much more seedy stores on 3rd Avenue.

And the regulations would be more harsh for across from a public school, by the way. However, by the time a kid hits junior high, let's hope they know a little something about sex from her/his parents. Believe me, they're getting it from places other than the Pink Pussycat window. (Getting it = information, not necessarily sex.) -

Heh. I grew up in the West Village and used to walk past that store regularly. I'm sure that there are much worse stores that your kids could be exposed to. -
My confusion stems from not understanding why the city worked so hard to re zone and forcibly close down so many shops of this nature that were situated in residential areas .
a year or so later this place opens up across from a school and somehow its ok.
to me, thats odd.
Mind you , i dont actually care.
I love sex and have no issues with sex toys nor do i give a crap about how anyone else gets their jolly's so long as all the nordic sex slaves are of age and give consent.
I just find the sequence of events and
apparent double standard / hypocrisy confusing.
what piece of the puzzle am i missing here ? -
My daughter went to this school and from what I could tell, the kids were just kind of embarrassed to pay too much attention to the store. It's not like they all had their noses pressed up against the glass - if anything, they avoided being seen looking in.

if you've done a decent job parenting, your fifth grader isn't going to be hanging out inside the pink pussycat.
making such a big deal about sex, drinking, drugs etc is EXACTLY what gets some kids curious about it.
make another big stink about it, and i guarantee more kids will want to know what the big deal is all about... -
Oh please give me a break! Big deal-they don't let kids into the store and there is never anything graphic in the windows either. You can't even see inside the store-people seriously need to relax themselves.
And, yes, I do have children and yes, one of my children did go to that school and maybe the younger one will go when they are old enough too-doesn't bother me in the least ! -

yeah, because all of us who send our kids to public school just don't give a damn  -

the fact that the store is there isn't news, it's been there for year and, as everyone has said, had a whole lot of conditions upon moving in.
there are tons of places a fifth grader see a dildo and not even know what it is. i've found that much of this stuff doesn't register with kids who aren't old enough, unless it's being shown in a manner than makes its use blatantly obvious. (the tampon/napkin machine in the ladies room at hebrew school, for example. for YEARS, as little kids, we had no idea what it was and each week we'd bring in dimes to buy tampons and look at them and try to figure out what they were for. napkins? we didn't need to even spend our dimes on them because they were what you used on your lap for eating... and this was the 70s, folks, and we were precocious kids. ) -
Who gives a crap?
Do you want kids getting knocked up and catching herpes because they don't know what sex is? -
And, yes, the store is open during the school day, but they keep the doors locked and the door covered so no one can see in.

Seriously.
It's disgusting how upset people seem to get over THE most natural thing in the living world...and the reason we're all here to begin with. -
But it's ok, right? Because this only happens to public school kids?
Surely private school parents would never let this happen?
Either seasidearms is trying to start a new Gawker controversy, or she genuinely believes that private school parents are either more concerned or more able to protect their kids than public school parents.
I think she'd be surprised at the number of Ivy League kids the local public schools have turned out, and the fierceness with which their parents protected them en route... -
Yeah, we all know how important a dildo is to a childs sexuality. Next time some of you are looking for a birthday gift for your pre-teen buy them a dildo.
-
i think seeing a dildo would make a pre-teen giggle her head off. and i don't much have a problem, if she happens to come across one, to her using it. (granted, i don't have kids, but i'm going to go out on a limb here and say that if they want to do something bad enough, they're going to do it. pre-teen girls get their periods, they use tampons. shouldn't they feel comfortable with their bodies?)

Find a pre-teen and give her one and let me know what her parents said. -

her parents will be mad and they will take it away. i'm not a idiot.
but if you think pre-teen girls don't know what parts go where, and aren't curious about those parts going places, then you're dead wrong. -

plus, i'll hazard a guess that any parent who has a dildo in the house has a pre-teen who's found it by snooping while the parent was out to dinner.

+1. This is so so so true.
And show me a girl who hasn't masturbated by the age of 15 and I'll show you 30 who have. Lets not be stupid, folks. Maybe if more girls were comfortable enough with their bodies to explore them and learn about them ON THEIR OWN there wouldn't be so many teen pregnancies and STDs. -

Shit, fuck the children (er, _not_ literally,) beware the adults. From a NYC release earlier this week:NEW YORK CITY – June 9, 2008 – The Health Department reported today that more than a fourth of adult New Yorkers are infected with Herpes Simplex Virus-2, the virus that causes genital herpes. HSV-2 is a lifelong sexually-transmitted infection that can cause painful genital sores in a minority of cases, but most people have no recognizable symptoms. The prevalence of the condition is also concerning because it facilitates the spread of HIV – doubling the risk that a person will contract HIV when exposed to it. HSV-2 can also be serious when transmitted to newborns, although these cases are rare.
http://home2.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/pr2008/pr039-08.shtml
The new study suggests that genital herpes is more common in New York City than nationally (26% of adults versus 19%). Among New Yorkers, the rate is higher among women than men (36% versus 19%), higher among blacks than whites (49% versus 14%), and higher among men who have sex with men than those who don’t (32% versus 18%). This is the first measurement of New York City’s infection rate, but the national rate has declined in recent years.
Not that I necessarily think that a sex shop in proximity to a school will solve this problem.
