Softball

I know it is most likely too late, but I thought I would ask anyways. I just recently moved to the area and was wondering if their were any local softball leagues that might still be fielding teams. If not, do you know when the fall leagues will start up?

Thanks.

  • In Prospect Park there is a pickup game every Sunday in one of the softball fields (I forget the number of the field) that starts up around 12:00. They guys (it is mostly men) rent the field and play 2-3 games every Sunday. These are great games and HIGHLY competitive. The players are mostly NY liberal/artsy guys and they play real hard. If you are the type of player who drops pop flys and then gets man when 8 other players on your team start calling you names, then avoid this game. This is not beer league.

Many of the guys who play in this game also play in a very competitive league that plays on weekdays and weekends. If you prove yourself, they may ask you to join one of their teams.
  • That group is extremely insular and a bit over the hill.
  • Over the hill? Well, you won't see a lot of emo t-shirts, but the guys playing will easily beat your average team of college softball players.

Those guys are passionate ball players who play hard and will accept you if you play hard too. I walked by at the right time, got in a game, and was accepted. If you stop by on a perfect spring day and there are already 15 regulars waiting to get in the game, you have no chance. If you stop by a couple of times, run out those grounders, and take the game seriously, you will be fine.

Maybe you could let us all know the appropriate age to play softball. Thanks in advance.
