New computer zoom help! — Brooklynian

New computer zoom help!

rapture
edited November -1 in Park Slope
My partner got a brand new laptop and left the booklet that came with it at work! Does anyone know how to increase the page size (zoom level?) on new computers?? It used to be on the bottom right hand side but on the new ones it seems to be different. Any help would be appreciated! (Our OLD eyes need to have the print bigger!!!). Thanks in advance :)

  • are you talking about screen resolution (meaning how big EVERYTHING looks) or are you trying to read the booklet online and it's too small?

is this a PC or a Mac?
  • We are trying to make "how big everything looks" BIGGER,,,,This is a PC,,,, a Panasonic toughbook laptop,,,,
  • Are you talking about the print size within your browser when you're online? You can set the default font size using the preferences menu for your browser.
  • The web pages themselves are centered on the screen and narrow making the print tiny......On my older computer I can change this by going to the right hand bottom of the screen and clicking on zoom level. The laptop doesn't seem to have that feature in its browser.

    What browser are you using?
  • hold control and press the + sign see if that helps
  • I think it is Internet Explorer 8.
  • I almost never use explorer, but I think you can change the text size using the preference menu. Or you can "zoom" using the "View" dropdown menu.

But really, you should switch to Firefox. ;P
  • Thanks vidro3. I tried that and it didn't work. Not sure if it is the same in IE8.
  • I have the same problem on Firefox.
  • Internet Explorer 8 is a beta version. IE 7 is the most recent full version. You can download it here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/default.mspx

On every computer I've had the ctrl and + has worked to increase the page size.

You can also go to the menu bar, select view, and from the drop down menu go to text size, then pick a larger size.
  • Thanks all for the advice. The type size is now larger. The page, though, is still small Since it is happening on Firefox and IE, maybe it is a computer setting. I'll call their support when it opens in the a.m.
  • I think you want to change your screen resolution.

Get into Control Panel and look for "personalize", "display settings" or "screen resolution" and play around with the different settings until it looks good to you.
  • I think my partner has given up for the night! :) She said she will try and reach the computer service center in the morning. Thanks to all for your help!! :)
  • Go find a teenager. They'll sort you out in no time!

That only increases font size not page size. It makes the letters bigger but the page size is the same so you see less of what you are looking at
  • its hard to provide tech support with so few details.

that said, i am presuming you are on Windows Vista (good luck with that).
the tool you are talking about is called "magnifier" and can be found under Start>Programs>Accessories>Ease of Access>Magnifier. You can play with the levels in there.
  • Hi all :) Thanks for everyone's assistance in this matter :)

Flexi, you were correct! lol It was something with the screen resolution,,,,not sure what she was doing wrong, but today she did it right LOL

jayce -- thanks for your suggestion but for some reason even though it is a brand new computer, it doesn't have Windows Vista,,,still has Windows XP!

    Thanks again everyone :)
  • Aha! All of these years of working in technology (although not technical) finally pays off!

    Glad you got it sorted
