Any good beauty parlor for African-American young woman?

I am a african- american lady seeking a good salon/ hairdresser for my perms/relaxers, wash and set/ wrap. Also sometimes I want to do braids. Any good african hairbraiding place?

  • Don't know where you are located at but Nostrand Ave or Utica Ave would have several beauty salons.
  • If you dont mind traveling, then Time Salon and Follicles in Ft Greene are 2 excellent salons. They are a little pricey but well worth it. There is a guy named Neil in Follicles that does several friends of mine.He does excellent work with perms. For hairbraiding, there is Aja's hair braiding on Nostrand between Bergen and St Marks. She does excellent work.

    Hi Peddle,

I too am African-American and most of the salons here in the BK leave a lot to be desired. If you are not getting a weave, braids, or locks...the quality is suspect. I have tried many of the salons and the Dominicans as well. My tried and true stylist of choice is Danielle Bennett. She has been doing my hair for years and she knows what she is doing. I have had long, thick hair for all of my life until a few months ago when I had to cut it all off. Danielle knows how to make your hair bouncy, beautiful and healthy. She is located at Victory of the Saints Salon in Manhattan...42nd between 9th/10th. She is also reasonably priced. Let me know if you'd like her number.
  • I have locs but the salon I go to does relaxers, weaves, cornrows, etc. It's called Knapps and is on Nostrand and Union. It's a nice, clean, bright spot and very reasonable. Good luck!
  • I'm just curious- I was walking up and down franklin the other day and in just 4 blocks there had to be like 8 salons!* How do these places stay in business? None of them seem to ever be full (I guess Saturdays is the big day...) but if there were any other business that had 8 others in the immediate area, they would never survive.

*this does not include barber shops, of which there are also a ton of.
