  • Actually, the age at which a kid should not pee on the sidewalk is entirely arbitrary... a matter of social convention.

I don't think anyone has the right to tell anyone else at which age their kid should not be allowed to pee on the sidewalk.

You don't want to see it... don't look at it.

My kids are grown, way beyond the age at which this issue might be relevant. To the best of my admittedly weakening memory, they (both girls) never ever peed on any sidewalk, gutter or other outdoor location.

But I wouldn't want someone taking it upon themselves to tell me, or my kids, what is or is not "appropriate".

Ah, a libertarian. There are many rules which we adhere to in NYC, the law against people peeing in the street is just one of them.

Further, you think this issue may not be relevant with grown folk, but it is. I've certainly seen drunk folk of age pissing. Even _on_ subway cars. Which is lame. And inappropriate. And illegal. And I have no problem telling them to fuck off and I hope they get a ticket.
  • Jamzer wrote: Dogs do have other options. They could pee and shit on their owner's yards. If you don't have a yard - maybe you should not have a dog.
Jamzer wrote: Yes - dogs have other options. How about peeing in the dog runs? Maybe dogs can be trained to pee into the sewer drains? I don't really care, but if piss on the street bothers you so freaking much you maybe should not have a dog!?!?!?!

The point of this thread was the OP, a dog owner, expressed shock or annoyance or whatever that a little kid pee'd onto the street while they were taking their dog for a walk to, I have to assume, take a pee on the street. I pointed out the irony. I suggested that if pee bothered a dog owner and they let that dog pee on the sidewalk then maybe they should not have a dog. Of course dogs have to pee on the street - fine. My comments were directed at dog owners who let their fidos pee on the street and post about how unsanitary and disgusting for a little kid to do the same thing. If I did not express this perfectly well, then I am sorry. If this leads you to think that I believe dogs that don't have yards should be put down, that is your reading comprehension issue, not mine.

I applaud anyone and everyone, even you, that rescues dogs. You have to have a big heart. I love dogs. Clearly a dog is better off living in an apartment than getting put down, but that is besides the point.

If you think there is more human piss than dog piss on the sidewalk, then that might be a problem on your block, but it is absolutely not the case on mine. That sticky, black, dried out puddle infront of the gate to my building that has been there for two days is dog piss, not kiddie piss. I can't walk down my block without looking at my feet because of dog shit, not kiddie shit.

Feel free to continue to twist my words and create a controversy where none exists. I just don't understand it.
Jamzer, I will admit that my first response was a bit more defensive than it should have been. But I think you need to read what you wrote before you accuse me of twisting your words. I'm glad no kid has taken a shit on your sidewalk and failed to clean it up. I take comfort in the fact that no young dog has slapped me on the ass while I'm minding my own business.

A little boy slapped me on the ass tonight

I do apologize for getting so angry in my first post, I know that doesn't help further rational discussion.

It doesn't matter if you are minding your own business or not! _NO_ young dog has the right to slap your ass without your _explicit_ permission. Or old hound either, for that matter. Anything more than a quick sniff and wag is totally inappropriate and not to be tolerated.
  • Oh daver, I know what you mean. The amount of dog shit on the streets over here is just nasty. I hope the new $250 fine will help but not if there isn't anyone to give out tickets. #-o

Caseopele - thank you very much for your apology. It is hard to express sarcasm in a message board and my post was full of it, so I can certainly see how my comments could have been taken in a way I did not mean.

I love dogs and would never want to leave anyone with the impression that they should be destroyed instead of finding a loving home.

For what it is worth - my son went through a phase when he was a young 3 year old where he was occasionally slapping people on the butts as we walked on the sidewalk. The phase lasted about two weeks. I admonished him every time he did it and tried to apologize to anyone he hit (I think it happened about 3 or 4 times). I think we covered everyone, but it is possible I missed one. If he hit you, I apologize for that and even if it was not my son, I'll apologize on behalf of all parents.

If it's worth $250, there will be people to give out tickets.
  • Oh Jamzer, I'm positive it wasn't your son! This kid was around 5 or 6 and his "guardians" were paying zero attention to him. It was really more surreal than anything, I mean the kid turned and gave me a "what are you gonna do about it?" look.

I just wish there were more greenish areas for dogs by me, my older dog's arthritis is too bad to make it to Prospect Park. And I also wish people weren't such assholes, whether they're dog owners or drunk jerks pissing on the sidewalk. One night I came home to a guy peeing through the fence onto the church next to my building. Even as an athiest I thought that was especially bad.

How about this? Dog owners have to pick up their dog's poop and not let them pee on flowers, houses, and garbage bags. And little kids can pee on the street if they absolutely have to but discreetly. No waving the peeny around like they're trying to put out a fire.

In Crown Heights, maybe not so much.

Maybe, maybe not, but the money still spends the same.

Most reasonable comment yet, btw. If someone had written this in the first place, this thread would be one post long.

NY Legislature passes bill to increase pooper scooper fine
    6/4/2008, 5:45 p.m. EDT
    The Associated Press

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The Legislature has given final passage to a bill that would charge $250 — more than double the current fine — for pet owners who don't pick up after their dogs in some parts of New York state.

Dog owners currently have to pay $100 if they don't pick up the poop. The change would apply to the five boroughs of New York City, Albany and Yonkers.

The Assembly passed the bill Wednesday and the Senate had already passed it.

A spokesman for Gov. David Paterson says the governor will review the measure.
