Jones Beach or Fire Island Nude Beaches
Wasn't sure which board to post this, but here goes anyway.
We (my wife and I) are considering going to a nude beach for the first time and have heard good things about Lighthouse Beach on Fire Island. That's a bit tough to get to without a car, so we are also considering the area on Jones Beach that is clothing-optional.
Does anyone have any experience with either of these beaches? If so, was it possible to access it without a car?
Thanks in advance.

i highly recommend the nude beach in sandy hook, new jersey.
there is a ferry from manhattan. very nice, laid back and beautiful beach...
you'll have to look online for the ferry info...i haven't been in two years, but i'm DYING to go back.
once you go nude, you never go back... -
Thanks. We're likely going on a Friday, and wanted to make sure the crowds would be ample enough to feel comfortable (safe). The ferry/shuttle bus certainly looks like an easy alternative to negotiating the LIRR plus Long Island buses.

i've spent part of the last couple summers on fire island at kismet, the first beach east of the lighthouse. (the nude area is between kismet and the rest of the state park.) i've walked into that area plenty of times.
seems pretty chill. never been remotely crowded in my experience, but i've always been there on a weekday. certainly feels perfectly safe -- plenty of people wandering along the shore from points east, as well.
you can easily get there without a car by taking the LIRR to bay shore and then a ferry to kismet. (that's how we get to kismet every year.) -

I grew up on LI, and went to Fire Island a lot. You can park on Field 5 and walk east (towards the lighthouse). Many people out, and you will feel safe (plently of people unless it's a bad day).
A lot of gay men, Euro families and various other nudists. People don't start trouble and many people go to the same spot every week and seem to know each other.
I usually take a huge walk from regular field 5 to the lighthouse and back, which means you walk right through the nude part.
If you have a lot of stuff to carry, you can drive up to where the dunes start, leave somebody with your stuff and then go park. It seems like a long walk, but I've never done it. -

I am a big fan of Sandy Hook's nude section! It has a great mix of body types that helps you relax about any hang ups. Its clean and the ferry service, which is just under an hour, is ideal. They boats leaving from the south seaport now instead of financial district.

^forgot that you also need to get from the train to the ferry. you can either take a van (they meet the train and cost ~$5-8) or just walk. the walk isn't bad if you're not carrying stuff for a week. i'd allow 20-30 minutes, less without stuff. print a map from google (although we did without and were okay, i'd have felt more confident with one.)

when you get to kismet, walk straight across the island and turn right when you get to the ocean. there is a sign when you enter the nude part. the naked people will also be a hint. -

Thanks all. Looks like we'll be heading to Sandy Hook (Gunnison Beach) by ferry and the free shuttle bus. Still a bit nervous as first timers, but looking forward to it!

So what is the deal with boners and nude beaches? Does everyone just ignore it? I realize that the nude thing isn't really a sexual thing, but I imagine that it must happen occasionally. By which, I don't mean that I am sitting here imagining it happen, but rather just that it stands to reason that it would. Happen. That is. Sometimes. And what about PDB? Is that frowned on, or does anyone care?

WTF is PDB? I know what PDA is, but now I'm confused.
As for boners...... ::::::::::ignore::::::::: -

PDB
I knew I'd be sorry I asked.
There ain't no way in hell I'd get my hooha pierced, although I've seen all kinds of piercings whilst strolling on Fire Island -

The Jones Bch nude section is nice, if a bit of a hike. In my experience it's at best a mix of nude and clothed and mostly gay. Been meaning to try Sandy Hook. Now that we've got the tykes we can do a nude family beach day!

Subject: Fire Island is great
Hey, let us know what you think after you go.
I really like Fire Island "Lighthouse Beach." It's a wonderful beach with very friendly people. Hit the beach. Visit the lighthouse and see the museum, walk to the top for one of the best views you've ever seen. Walk over to Kismet for lunch (no cars. Just little red wagons!!!) Don't forget to look for deer, especially in the evening! Visit the bay side of the island for a dreamy sunset and to watch the boats sailing Great South Bay.
Very accessible by car (Robert Moses field 5, or boat to Kismet (Train to Bay Shore.) Nice walk out to the beach either on the sand or the wonderful rustic boardwalks through the magnificent beach plants. It's best early morning and evening.
The main thing, as I said, is that people are friendly and are really having a good time. There is hardly ever any loud music playing. There's a crowded part (especially on weekends) and an empty part. I'e been going there for more than 20 years. Used to be a lot of great kite flying, beach sculpting, big 4th of July parties with magic shows, amazingly artistic body painting (one year they painted bathing suits on everyone), Tuxedo day (just the cuffs and collars) .... though it seems to have calmed down in recent years, which is too bad. Didn't get there last year; maybe it's back to its old self. One thing: stay off the dunes. It's bad for the beach, and the dunes have lots of deer ticks.
There are showers at Robert Moses, though in recent years they have only been cold water.
Howdy, Stranger!
