(horrible service, terrible overpriced nothing special food... why THIS is still in business i'll never know...)
mostly mediocre and, at the very least, inconsitent? yes. i don't know about "overrated," though.

for the most part, every Italian place in the Slope not named "Al Di La" or "Tempo" is barely even on the map.

here's an overrated Italian place in the Slope: Elementi. Even Time Out New York said it would give Al Di La a run for its money. i took the bait and ate there. it firmly belonged in the middle of the pack with the rest of them (Sette, Sotto Voce, Scottatido, etc.)

I will never try that place because of what assholes they were to one of our regular posters when they were first opening.

Me too. I won't step foot in there. Ya don't mess with us :-)

  • I'm glad I've heard everyones perspective on Elementi. That TONY article threw me off and actually made me consider going (although I went to Al Di La instead, happily).

  • See that's why I love you guys, it makes me feel like we're family. :D It's like that at my job, we all squabble with each other but if someone else messes with one of us then it's time to circle the wagons!

Oh, and Rancho Alegre's food may suck but their drinks are pretty damn tasty from what I remember. It's been a while since I went out to dinner but I've been to Al di la twice, about 4 years apart. The first time I loved it but the 2nd time (last August, I think) I was less than impressed.

Belleville - too salty (ate there once about 4-5 years ago).

I've eaten at Convivium 3-4 times over the last 5 years and it was good each time.

Tempo was average, not really worth the price (ate there twice).

Stone Park - meh, nothing to write home about.

MOD NOTE: And you can't even read the worst comments about Stone Park because of their threats of litigation.

  • I ate in Element once shortly after it opened and it was stellar AWEFUL experience. I never went back Belleville had its day.. but it is way over! I never go there either. I have never set foot in Rancho Allegre and if I have been lucky enough to avoid it for all these years I am not going in there now.

This is an interesting thread because there are so many good choices in the Hood that it helps to get opinions and cross off some losers before you waste time and money.

Do you mean that store on Union near 7th Avenue? Where they sell a lot of overpriced chewing gum and lolly pops? Or is thatBlue Bonnet...or Blue Apron?

  • Tempo - meh. When I've gone with a few people we've ordered from all over the menu and no one has ever had an outstanding dish.

Sette - OK food but when the service is bad, it's atrocious. We had a memorable evening with friends when I called to book a table for six and asked for a quiet table by the wall. Got there and the beyond-rude host blithely says, "oh, after you called another party called for a table for 10, and the only place we have to put them is where you were going to be, so we moved you" and he tried to seat us right next to the open kitchen. Had a huge squabbling match with him when he wouldn't let us sit in the almost-empty tented extension area because "we don't have any large tables there" - we had to physically start dragging tables together for our party before he relented. Server brought over a HOT bottle of red wine, and when we questioned her she said, "oh, is it a little warm? It's stored above the ovens." I got the wrong dish and the server argued that it was what I had ordered. Never been back and am shocked that the place stays in business.

  • Okay -- Long Tan? I haven't been there in a while and feel like trying it again...anyone know what the bar menu is like/beer selection? I've only been to the restaurant proper, sit-down, but had heard they have a good bar menu selection...

    Anyone able to weigh in?

  • Bogota, too much salt.

    Bonnie's, sub par grub.

    Tempo, hit or miss.

Blue Ribbon, their sushi is served way too cold. I haven't tried their kitchen food.

Geido, has gone way down hill.

City Sub, c'mon man it's frigging Boar's Head you can get the same stuff from the Koreans on Berkeley and 7th or La Bagel.

The New Orlean's place, it just plain sucks.

Brooklyn Fish Camp, Nova Scotia wanna be's

Tom's is sort of. Even though they're in the Heights. The food isn't as great as some people rave about but their service is second to none and Gus is pretty cool.

Even my beloved Taro is starting to be hit or miss depending which day you go and which sushi chef you get.

Elementi I didn't think was that bad. If they use extra virgin olive oil instead of the light stuff I think their food would improve ten fold. Also, when I went there the owners were asking me and other table what we thought and what we thought could use improvement.

I think one under rated place is Tonio's. It's a pretty good Italian "gravy" place. Certainly no Al di La but good non the less.

And the fresh ingredients. All the condiments are perfect- the lettuce is always crispy- no weird brown or dried out pieces.

How about not being assholes to your neighbors?
