Mission: Avoid Tolls
imagine that you're traveling from brooklyn to new jersey and back.
imagine that you're not concerned about how long the trip takes -- instead, you're only interested in avoiding bridge and tunnel tolls or, failing that, paying the least the amount you can.
what is the best way to accomplish this trip -- out on the verrazano and over the gothals, back in through the lincoln or holland and into brooklyn on the manhattan bridge?

Imagine you factor in the cost of gas.

You've got it backwards on the bridge and tunnel thing... you'd want to go out through one of the tunnels (no toll outbound) and come in via the Verrazano (no toll inbound). I cannot remember whether there is a toll on the Gothals, or in which direction(s).

what booklaw said. I do it a few times a week.
Take the city route leaving town - $Free
on the way back,
$8 toll on the Goethals into Staten Island.
Verrazzano into Brooklyn = $Free
OR
$8 for the Holland/Lincoln/GW inbound.
I find, depending on the time of day, that it is easier on gas (less stop and go) going the Staten Island route. Although if its 5-8pm, its usually 10mph at best thru Staten Island.
The Verrazzano outbound is $10, and I do not know if you have to pay for the Goethals into Jersey either. I dont go that way. -

If time and gas aren't a factor, go up the West Side Highway all the way up to the Bear Mountain Bridge. No toll there, but you'll burn up a buttload of gas. Pay the toll, it's cheaper.

The toll on the Outerbridge Crossing, Bayonne and Gothals bridges is the the same as the Holland and Lincoln tunnels - $8 cash -

Find other two people who need to go to/from NJ, use ez pass and sign up for the carpooler discount.
Inbound toll at the Holland/Lincoln tunnels/GWB is then only $2. Drawback is that you have to use a human-manned toll lane (so they can check that you have 3 people). -

rowboat? helicopter? I think you could avoid tolls with both of those methods.

Every time I read the topic heading, I think it reads "Mission: Avoid Trolls."
That said, I haven't seen any trolls under the Outerbridge.
Good luck. -

If you are going up the West Side Highway then you are in the city already and there are no tolls westbound at any of the crossings,Holland, Lincoln, GW. There is still a toll eastbound on the Bear Mountain Bridge of $1 -

this has been very helpful. i asked because yesterday i rented a car in brooklyn, had to run some errands in manhattan, then had to drive to philly, and return the car to brooklyn this morning.
i can confirm that, excepting the bear mountain route, the way to go is: out on the lincoln/holland (free) back in on the gothals ($8) and over the verrazano (free). -

sorry for the emoticon. that was supposed to read that it costs eight dollars to take the gothals into staten island from new jersey.
