Someone to put together furniture? — Brooklynian

Someone to put together furniture?

edited November -1 in Park Slope
I just bought a bed on craiglist (which armchair warrior graciously helped me move to my apt w/his delivery service!) But now I cant figure out how to put the bed together!

And whats worse is there are pieces missing from the tool packet, and i lost my patience trying to figure out how to put it together today. I'm tired of sleeping on a mattress on the floor!

Does anyone know of a person who does this? I remember reading an article about the new IKEA and some guy that they're promoting for deliveries and putting together furniture, but i dont remember where i saw it.

  • I saw that article today too, but they did not list the guy's contact info. There are other people on Craigslist who do this, just search for "assembly" or "ikea" in the services section and you will probably find someone.

I need someone to come and put together a small dinette set, so I hope someone will post up some recommendations!

  • You know, I always think about doing that to make extra money. I've always had a knack for putting cheap furniture together. What would you guys pay me?

Edit: Eh, nevermind. Just looked at what people charge on craigslist. I'd have to do a bunch to make it worthwhile. I'll just stick to my day job.

  • caaahyoko: You definitly know what your getting into. I bought 5 pieces from overstock.com. I found someone on craiglist who had several people working for him as furniture installers. I called up the guy and he asked for the model name and he looked up the pieces on overstock.com. he gave me a price of $300 and said the job will be done by 2 men and will take 2-3 hours to fully assemble.
although I could do the job myself, it would have taken me a lot longer then 3 hours and I did not want to waste my weekend putting furniture together....so I gladly agreed to the price.
2 guys showed up at 6pm and started to work. They were not finished till 2am!!!! my wife was very upset because the banging was keeping her up and she had to sleep in the guest room. In the morning we saw that the furniture had some scratches on them and the wood floor and scratches as well. My wife was practicaly in tears. I buffed out the scratches on the floor and the furniture and she felt better. I called up the owner of the company and he said that one of the 2 men was a recent hire and he did not expect the work to take that long. He sent me a $50 check in the mail for my trouble.

After your story, i decided to take another look at the bed and try to figure it out myself. And now that its raining it seems like a good rainy day thing to do.

  • is this an IKEA bed? if so, does it include anchor bolts -- these look like a bolt and a screw mated (screwed?). no "head", just a threaded rod that turns into a screw-threaded rod on the other end.

if so, WARNING: the IKEA directions may lead you astray about they work. i got stuck and very frustrated putting together my own IKEA bed. had to make a trip to the hardware store which i could have avoided if the directions had been made more carefully.

    just in case:
the directions may lead you to thread a nut onto the bolt side, put a wrench on the nut, and turn the wrench to screw the screw side into wood. DON'T. you need to put TWO nuts on the bolt side, and use the wrench on the top nut only. otherwise the nut will get permanently jammed on the screw side.

you may now commence with the nut/screw jokes i've been trying to avoid.

Thanks for the tips, but its actually a west elm bed. Before I bought the west elm bed, I had an ikea bed for 5 years which i had taken apart to move and put back together and couldnt figure out how to attach a few of the pieces. I went to the store to ask them, and one of their reps said i didnt need to attach those pieces b/c they dont do anything. Why the heck would they include them in the instructions then? And i was all freaked out sleeping on a mattress on the floor when i didnt need to even attach the damn pieces, grr.

  • I found a great guy on Brooklynian who's listed in the classifieds section that helped me put my bed together. He did an amazing job and I highly recommend him!

His name is Dan and his screename is Trainsmoke DeLeon. He charges $25 an hour and does everything from putting together furniture to walking your dogs, teaching you guitar, fixing your computer or watching your kids.

In addition to being perfectly on time and superfast at figuring how to put my west elm bed together, he's also a cool and creative musician who's performing as part of DeLeon at Celebrate Brooklyn on Sun July 20th. A show not to be missed!

  • I would also like to recommend Dan as a furniture assembler. He came to my house yesterday to put together a small dining table & stools that I've been avoiding dealing with myself. He was fast, competent, and friendly. He did a great job! Thanks Dan!
