who's going to watch?
i finally saw august: osage county yesterday, and i hope it wins everything. i am biased because i knew a number of the people involved through work when i lived in chicago. but i haven't by any means loved all the shows i've seen these folks (in various combinations and capacities) do.
saw passing strange a few weeks ago. enh. not entirely awful, but largely self-indulgent and dull. says a lot about the sorry state of things that this is even nominated.
haven't seen anything else nominated.

I absolutely agree w/you on August - just brilliant - best I saw all year and I hope it wins Best Play. Although I am anti-musical with every fiber of my body, I loved In The Heights and hopes it wins Best Musical.

i'm torn on deanna dunagan (violet) vs. amy morton (barbara) in the best actress category. (hopefully they won't just split the august vote.)
dunagan is incredible, but amy morton is hands down my favorite of the crowd of very good actors i grew used to seeing in shows around chicago. (oh, for the days i when i rated industry comps!) i've seen her do such different things so brilliantly, plus she is a top notch director. her glengarry, glen ross was one of my favorite shows i saw at steppenwolf. (i worked there for 4 years, so that's out of a lot of shows.) she is also a genuinely wonderful person.
rondi reed is another great favorite and all around nice person to talk with. i'm so happy to see her finally starting to get her due. she's aging into the parts she was born to play.
likewise, i think tracy letts (a great guy -- do you sense a trend? shall i go on and on about fran guinan and jeff parry's charms?) has in august successfully sorted out some of the themes and vocabulary that his last play dealt with much more awkwardly.
i don't mean to overstate my connection to these people in a name-droppy way, but i really did know them to some degree, and i can't help but feel proud of what they've done. -
