What's wrong w/FG's dog owners? — Brooklynian

What's wrong w/FG's dog owners?

Subject: What's wrong w/FG's dog owners?

A rant:

what is up with the entitled and irresponsible dog owners in this community? At the farmer's market this morning it was difficult to shop for fear of tripping over leashes, small scampering dogs and even a massive unleashed hound lying in the middle of the block. What gives? who are these people who think that they can pretend they're shopping sans pet and just wander around w/o making the slightest effort to control their dogs?

I know the brooklyn flea has been given a hard time for being a dog free zone but I think people who can't pay attention to what their pets are doing (or prevent said pets from lunging at other people's pets or at other people) should not be permitted to take pets to the market.

come on guys, last i checked it was a farmers market not a dog run. show a little common sense and community mindedness. ARGH

  • Hey, hey, hey!

Well said. There have been too many times when I've been down at the Farmer's Market and have to step around or over dogs cause their owners/care-givers aren't really paying attention to them.

    And we're dog owners!

  • i would just walk right on the leash or pretend to trip over it to make my point. these are the same ppl who feel they don't need to pick up their dog's feces.

dog owners who don't pick up their feces should have the feces thrown on their body and smeared..

  • Maybe they should move the market farther away from the park? Then the dog owners would not have to walk through it to get into the park.

Actually, I think it would be better if they made the market a kid free zone (at least no strollers). However, I fully recognize how ridiculous that is.

I just want to point out that FG park is one of the more responsible parks in the city when it comes to dog waste. It the human waste that people need to worry about.

  • and you just have to love the couples with the double-wide stroller and the dog in tow either trying to plow their way through the crowd or just parked in the middle of the aisle chatting with their other couple friends with strollers and dogs...............leave the market if you want to have a social gathering and let the rest of us shop the market!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It's hard out here for a hip, non dog owning, child-less, "laid-back", "multi-culturalist" in search of locally grown produce and other local fare (organic where possible) to maintain their cool laid back vibe with all these dogs walking around and children.

    Truly laughable.

They don't have to walk through the market to get to the park. I think these people are just people who want to shop at the market who happen to bring their dog with them.

  • No, its just shocking how rude people are.

  • Honestly though, I love seeing all the dogs at the market and have absolutely no problem with people bringing their dogs there. I've never seen them to be a nuisance or a problem; I don't feel that they're in the way at all. It's a community, people like myself love to see everyone out in the morning and having a good time and talking to one another, and that includes children and dogs. I would never tell someone not to bring their dog or their child to the market with them.

  • The truth is that the FG Market would never have taken off if it wasn't for the 'rude' dog owning breeders. Sounds like some too cool for school types need to calm down.

Storm in a teacup - but my the internet sure does allow you to see into the inane hang-ups of a precious few who need to express themselves  .

Wow, two snide comments in a row. Tell us how you really feel?

But in all seriousness -- I've never been seriously inconvenienced by dogs or strollers or bikers at the farmer's market. But on occasion someone is there who lets their dog go unleashed/lets the leash get into people's ways/etc. Not every dog owner does this, but the confined space does exacerbate any kind of traffic issue.

My advice: if you've got a dog, just be careful where the leash is, and if you don't have a dog, just cut the dog owners a little slack. It's a small space and everyone's trying to share it. Cutting out dog owners won't solve the problem, nor will snarking at the people who have been tripping over dogs.

  • I don't mind the dogs at the market too much, but what I do mind is all the dog (I am guessing) crap which is on the sidewalks all over the place. I can't seem to take a walk in the neighborhood without running into a few piles. This is nasty!

  • I think the market is crowded enough without us dog owners bringing our pooches with us. I just take my dog to the park first, then come back without her to go shopping.
  • just yesterday, about 3pm, a dog owner with his dog walks onto the grass at prospect park, just by grand army plaza in the long meadow. after about 10 paces onto the grass, his dog starts to defecate, no less than 3 feet from the towel of a woman who had been sunbathing.

the woman notices it, the dog is done defecating, and she starts cracking up. i was disgusted at this point.

then the dog owner takes out his newspaper ( guess he was too obese to quickly spread the paper when he noted his dog about to sh*t) and proceeds to take a very perfunctory wipe up of his doggie's doo.

    disgusting dog owner he is..

then 2 minutes later, i see a 3 or 4 year old child bounding across the general area barefeet..

so since off leash is only during 9pm to 9am, does that mean dog owners can bring their dogs onto the grass on a leash at all other hours?
  • what do you expect from people who kiss their dogs on the mouth and sleep in the bed with them? :puker:
