not sure if they still have it - but 2 years ago they also had a private grant that paid for micro-chipping your pet for next to nothing! they do take muffins, too. -

UPDATE -
The cat, "Dizzy" for the moment, is doing. He's still living in my 2nd bathroom, but ideally we'd like to find a great home for him.
He's a friendly guy but clearly very scared, and it shows. He goes from loving being scratched behind the ear to hissing and batting at me, but he still hasn't put his claws out, so its clearly fear rather than aggression.
I took him to Hope Vet yesterday evening - thank you Ariel for the carrier (which he went into ok, but yowled all the way there and back and clearly didn't want to get back in it after the vet). He did pretty well, especially when they brought out catnip, which he LOVED, but was too freaked out to get much done other than checking his ears, eyes, mouth and listening to his heart. Dr. Young (who is incredibly nice) gave me something called "Composure" to give him which should help him calm down - it imitates the hormones in mother's milk or something - and she wants me to give that to him for a few days and then see how he does. If that doesn't help we can move on to kitty Valium...
Basically she couldn't test him for everything because he's too scared - she said he has PTSD from being outside, and thinks he was probably thrown out by former owners once he started "spraying" - they could have neutered them and he would have stopped of course.
Next course of action is to get him calmed down and then he'll go for neutering and tests, and also get softpaws put on because he does like to stick his nails into the rug! Hopefully this can happen later next week.
Yesterday's vet visit cost $101 with a 10% discount they will give me for the duration of the time I keep him, and she gave me a free "cat dancer" toy. Neutering, tests and shots will obviously be a lot more expensive, but she is very nice and we'll go over everything to decide exactly what he needs and not get him unnecessary and expensive tests.
The "Composure" seems to have made him a bit calmer, but he still gets upset, and I think we might try letting him out of the bathroom a bit more, maybe making him a "home" in our 2nd bedroom, but we have a guest today, tomorrow and then another coming next week so we'll see how that goes.
Please keep your ears out for anyone who might want to adopt this little guy. He is a beautiful cat, and Dr. Young said that he seems very healthy - just very scared and in need of love. -

So... the cat is still living with me, now moved in to the second bedroom. He is still hissing and swiping, and I think we may need to try something other than Composure to calm him down.
However, I am appealing to those of you who are cat lovers and occasional rescuers/fosters. I have a friend coming to stay with me for a week, and it will be difficult to have the cat here at the same time. She has bad allergies, and I'll have to move him back to the bathroom, which isn't ideal for him, and it makes space very tight in our apartment.
Would anyone be able to foster him from tomorrow (Wed) through next Tuesday. I bought a ton of food for him yesterday, he has a box, and I could bring him to you and pick him up, along with all the supplies he will need.
Just a shot, but I *hope* someone can help! -

Prozac?
I wish that I could help, but I don't think that my cat would do much for his ptsd. He's also a male tiger cat, but very large and these can be very high maintenance (but also rewarding) cats. One should never allow them to go unfixed. I had to get mine fixed at 5 months because he was humping his toys and his balls were huge. -

I appreciate the honesty, but describing a cat as "hissing" is not a great selling point. I would not use the H-word in a cat advertisement.

raw, I have to be honest. I wouldn't tell someone who is potentially taking this cat in that he is perfectly-behaved and then have them think I was deceiving them. I know it won't make it easy for me to find a place for him, but I need to be honest about it.
Once he has calmed down (which he will) and I have him neutered and am looking for a permanent home for him I will "advertise" him properly, as a very cute and sweet cat. At the moment I'm just looking for a little temporary help, if I can get it. If not, I'll make do! -

I agree with you Bergenite - you need to be very honest when you're putting an animal for adoption....and I wish I could take the cat for you for a few days....but I have a very small apartment and 2 very old cats.
By the way, one of my cats has been a "hisser" since he was about 10 months old but I still love him to death!
And I still think you are a wonderful person for doing this! -

If he is anything like my cat the owner may have a few bite marks when cat feels like it's play time. I got a new one last night.

Hell, I love the little bastard. -

For the record I LOVE hissy kitties. It's awesome, like a little panther!

Yeah, they are REAL cats! -
Exactly, I love cats because they have there own personalities and they keep a bit of the Big Cat mentality. Nothing like seeing a kitty stalking it's prey and pouncing. Even if it is only a waterbug

It is very nicce of you to tell it like it is. -

Must be better than owning that dog that ate its owner's face off.

Ewwww Raw, must you go there???
-
It's true. I saw it on TV. The woman had to get a face transplant. I wonder if she kept the dog.
-
Well, the saga of the mean kitty continues.
We've kept him in the bathroom while my friend has been here - not ideal, as I think he really hates being confined. I'm hoping that when she's gone (she is leaving tonight), I can devote some time to letting him out and giving him space to roam. He's actually fine when we do let him out, just doesn't like being put back into the bathroom (I can't blame him, much, the bathroom is very small). I'll have to keep him confined to the guest room, but it is a lot bigger, and I'll try to let him out when I'm home. I'm just afraid he'll attack my dog, who would frankly just sit there and let him attack.
He still needs to be neutered which I can hopefully arrange for next week... unfortunately the valium isn't doing a thing, but I have a call in to the vet to see if it will take time for it to take effect, or if its not working, what we can try next.
If anyone hears of foster homes with room, or a nice person who is willing to take him on, please let me know. I think he'd do better without a dog, but being with other cats might actually be good for him (put him in his place, so to speak), but I really don't know. -
How's the kitty doing? Any updates?
-
Thanks for asking! He is doing a bit better... currently living in my guest room and this morning I went in there to clean his litter box and we co-existed for about 5 minutes without him hissing at all!
The vet told me to up his valium which I've done tonight for the first time. Unfortunately I think he's caught on because he isn't eating his dinner! Still, he has improved somewhat.
He is scheduled for neutering on Wednesday, and will stay at the vet through the weekend as I am going away for the holiday. The vet will experiment with some things to see if she can get him calmed down a bit better.
After he is neutered and declared healthy, I NEED to find him a HOME!!!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated! -
Bring the cat to a shelter or local vet and have them scan him for a microchip. If he has one, it will have the owner's contact info. If that fails, try craig's list stating as much as you know about him, local coffee shops, etc.
Good luck. -
great advice, but likely already done as she's had the cat neutered. she also tried to find the owner to no avail.
Howdy, Stranger!
