car missing — Brooklynian

car missing

On June 2nd, my car was towed due to illegal parking on Marlborough Rd. between Caton & Church Ave.s.

I've been calling 311, Navyyard, Marshalls, Police, but they have no record of my car.

But my car was def. towed!
I made a police report, and then the police officer also said it was towed since there are some evidences.

I haven't yet found my car yet!
I think a private tow service towed my car and failed to report to the police, or somebody in the process screwed up the record about my car.

Anyway, I need suggestions. What can I do to find my car back??

  • How do you know it was towed?

  • 1. yellow lines were newly put after my car disappeared (my car was blocking a driveway ;;)
    2. one guy, who lives at the place where my car was, saw it in the morning on June 2nd. This was a few hours before I came and realized. Nobody steals a car during the day time.
    3. my car has immobilizer, so I don think it s easy to steal.
    4. my car is Nissan Versa, which is the cheapest car within nissan. This is not the type of car that is stolen.

The police officer was also pretty sure of it.

  • I have no idea how you should find it, but I would imagine that if a private towing company took your car and didnt report it that would be technically stealing anyway! Let us know what you find...having a car towed is a serious pain in the ass (mine's been towed three times thanks to my boyfriend's apparent inability to read parking signs)

  • I would report it stolen. That "evidence" of towing is skimpy, and nobody has contacted you. I dont know what else you can do.

  • Happened to my niece by the Atlantic Mall. She parked on S Portland off S elliot and came back to find her car gone. Someone said it was probably towed. Sure enough a private tow for the mall towed it . nypd had no record of it and she was about to report it stolen when this gentleman said the mall had a private tow.when she checked they had towed it to a garage. Her dad told them if they didnt return it where they found it , he would sue them and charge them with theft. it was back in 30 minutes. there were no signs warning drivers that this was supposedly private property from a certain point near the loading dock and garage and no yellow lines to restrict parking.they continue to tow cars there when they want.
  • well he would have them charged with theft....maybe the same thing happened to you.good luck.
  • Subject: This could cost a pretty penny- fight!

A friend of mine visited two summers ago and parked in Inwood. I think he parked on the side that was to be cleaned the following morning. Normally, this constitutes a hefty ticket and a note from sanitation on first offense. But somehow his was towed. We tried to look it up and call 311/the Marshall but things take time- especially over the weekend. It was a civic hatch back and I had been informed by many that in that area, civics are more likely to be stolen than many other cars- so we had to report it just in case. He had to fly back to Ohio where he was from- missed a day of work-and since we waited 4 hours in the heat for the cops to report it, we were both a little sick.

Sure enough, a few days to a week later, it showed up in the records- and they were gonna A. not let it out unless the owner (his dad) got it. and B. charge him $600 for storage x # days. They fought it hard and got it down to cost of ticket + towing fee. He had no reason to be towed within 35minutes of being ticketed for alternate side.

    Keep checking it out
I mean, if you were knowingly in front of a drive...that sucks- but if the lines were absent and it was hard to tell- fight it.
If it wasn't a private tow, fight the storage cost for the # of days since you had no way of proving it was towed nor finding your car. (Argument being, had you known it was towed, you'd have gone ASAP for it-which could have been days earlier-if not the same day).

    Good luck!!
  • Since you parked in front of a driveway I'd say knock on the door of that home and ask if they had your car towed.

If you have access to another car I'd say get in and drive around the neighborhood and look around for it.

A couple years ago I was parked on 6th st in the slope and my car went missing. I called the authorities and they had no record of towing my car. After a month of hopelessness and endless talks with my insurance company, I get a call from a man who says my car has been parked infront of his house for a month and whether I had abandoned it. The rumor was the Sopranos were filming that day on 6th st a month ago and with no notice decided to move the cars in their camera views. So my car sat on 1st st for a month with an undated NYPD sticker that stated do not tow or ticket.

    Hope you find that car.
  • Hmm.. thank you for the info, guys!!

yeah, sometimes when there's a film shoot or road construction they will do the nice thing and move your car somewhere else in the neighborhood (instead of towing it to the impound lot)
  • If you were blocking a driveway there is a very good chance that it was towed by a private company of the homeowners choice. Just try knocking on the door and asking the guy. The tow company is supposed to notify the precinct but things do slip between the cracks.

Technically all of NY is a tow zone. You can be towed for any offense. Most of the time they stick to no standing, hydrants and fire zones but on slow days they will pick up whoever.
  • found my car! Stupid cops lost the records and i henceforth lost my job with no car. What a bunch of dicks!!!

MOD NOTE: misspelled insult towards poster who had nothing to do with the situation removed. -- sweet tea

    you should sue for real.
  • Subject: MY CAR WAS FOUND!!!!

The police located my car last week. It was actually towed by a private tow service not stolen, they said they couldn't locate my car due to system errors or something.
What s more, the private service charged me of over a thousand dollars as strage fee. This is ridiculous, I m def. gonna make small claims to the state!!
    this is bullshit!!
