Shit, fuck the children (er, _not_ literally,) beware the adults. From a NYC release earlier this week:NEW YORK CITY – June 9, 2008 – The Health Department reported today that more than a fourth of adult New Yorkers are infected with Herpes Simplex Virus-2, the virus that causes genital herpes. HSV-2 is a lifelong sexually-transmitted infection that can cause painful genital sores in a minority of cases, but most people have no recognizable symptoms. The prevalence of the condition is also concerning because it facilitates the spread of HIV – doubling the risk that a person will contract HIV when exposed to it. HSV-2 can also be serious when transmitted to newborns, although these cases are rare.
http://home2.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/pr2008/pr039-08.shtml
The new study suggests that genital herpes is more common in New York City than nationally (26% of adults versus 19%). Among New Yorkers, the rate is higher among women than men (36% versus 19%), higher among blacks than whites (49% versus 14%), and higher among men who have sex with men than those who don’t (32% versus 18%). This is the first measurement of New York City’s infection rate, but the national rate has declined in recent years.
Not that I necessarily think that a sex shop in proximity to a school will solve this problem.

daver, i read this yesterday. so glad i'm not still out there dating.
but at least it won't kill you, like HPV... the cdc says that "50% of sexually active men and women acquire genital HPV infection at some point in their lives"... condoms provide little protection (ladies, get your pap smears!!!!)
as for pre-teens and teens and those up to age 26, they're actually able to get vaccinated against 4 strains, 2 of which cause about 70% of cervical cancers.
public service announcement over. -

I wasn't trying to offend anyone but the fact remains that private schools have more involved parents than public schools. I have been on both sides and am more than aware of the difference. I also know teachers who would tell you in great detail how vast the difference is regarding parental involvement. My point is that there is no sex shop near St. Saviour's and I would bet there never would be, even if the school was located in a more central location. If you seriously believe parents who spend the money to send their kids to private schools do not have a greater impact on community boards and local politicians than you are sadly mistaken. As I stated before raising a child who is comfortable with their sexuality does not requie that they have access to sex shops. I am not agaist such stores, but I do believe there should be zoning restrictions.
I find it interesting that others think there should be no zoning and that it is perfectly okay to have a sex shop so close to a school. -

and st. saviors is a LOUSY example because they are a catholic school. -

Well then, seasidearms, it's a good thing that your kids didn't/aren't attend(ing) a school near a sex toy store. You're all set.

First of all-that is far from a fact! At least not in this neighborhood! If you think parents in this area who send their kids to public school aren't extremely involved, then you are sadly mistaken. Secondly, St. Savior's is a Catholic school, and yes, I would think they would fight a sex shop across the street from them-but, they are very different from a regular private school since they are a Catholic school.
I find it interesting that others think there should be no zoning and that it is perfectly okay to have a sex shop so close to a school.
BTW, just how long have you lived in Park Slope that you are just now realizing this store exists? -

Well, I did raise two kids and both of them got pretty explicit
Sex Education in church.According to a 1997 United Nations study that examined 22
I don't think that the Pink Pussy Cat would have phased them any more than it phased me when I was a kid.
HIV/AIDS and sexuality education programs, far from pro- moting promiscuity, such programs did one or more of the following:
* delayed the onset of sexual activity
* reduced the number of partners, or
* decreased the incidence of sexually transmitted disease and unplanned pregnancy -

The regulation stipulates that a sex store/adult bookstore, etc. cannot be closer than 200 yards from a school or church. I know this because the business where I work is next to an adult toy store that is literally around the corner from a church. The fun part is in April when the church leads its annual protest past the store!

I was born here so the answer would be I have lived here my entire life. Also I did not just notice the sex shop, I simply just now decided to inquire how others on this site felt about it. No one is demonizing sex, I made a simple comment about it's location. Perhaps if you had a better sex partner you would not think a sex shop is a neccessity

And then there are those of us who know that being comfortable enough to sometimes incorporate toys into sex is what makes you a better sex partner.

Sex shops have nothing to do with your partner being inadequate. -

Seasidearms.. Sometimes you need a thick skin to post on brooklynian. Though there are rules and basically the rules are... Be Nice.. sometimes a posting just inflames people for whatever reason and I think you are getting the fire off of some peoples' reactions. I don't think that you realized that your seemingly innocent post would get things kicking around here.
But... really... enough is enough.. calm down... all of you.
Whatever needs to be said about that Pussy Cat place has been said. -

but if you think pre-teen girls don't know what parts go where, and aren't curious about those parts going places, then you're dead wrong.
Um, who said anything about parts and what goes where? Again, I said go and buy a pre-teen girl a dildo since you said you don't have a problem with them using one then get back to me. -
